Parents’ illegal marriage prevents four from schooling
FOUR siblings in Ampang cannot go to school because they have no proper documents due to their parents’ illegal marriage, Kosmo! reported.
According to the children’s mother, Duanah Abdul Latif, 38, from Tawau, her marriage to husband Syawal Putra was solemnised in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, in 1998 by a syndicate which had promised to manage their wedding registration.
She said they had surrendered all the required documents and paid RM500, but had not received their marriage certificate when their first child was born.
They could not get a birth certificate from the hospital without it.
“We tried to apply for our marriage to be registered with the Penang Islamic Religious Council in 1999 but an officer there told us to go back to Sabah and get married there,’’ said Duanah.
She added her husband had tried applying for birth certificates from the National Registration Department in March last year but it was difficult for him to get verification from hospitals in Penang and Perak since he was an odd-job worker and was always on the move.
