<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->BY 2011, at least one of the three combined arms divisions of the Singapore Army will be equipped with the latest machines and weapons.
Besides operating out of better armoured vehicles and main battle tanks, soldiers will each carry a battlefield computer packed with sensors and communication devices, so calling for firepower will be as quick and easy as sending an SMS.
In other words, this division - which cannot be named for security reasons - will become a full-fledged Third-Generation (3G) fighting unit.
The operations of all its 4,000 soldiers are also integrated with those of the air force, navy and Home Team agencies and the firepower each branch brings, said the Chief of the Army, Major-General Neo Kian Hong.
Joint operations involving the three branches include protecting vital installations such as Jurong island and Changi Airport, and overseeing peace support and humanitarian and crisis relief missions.
Maj-Gen Neo, updating the media on the army's 3G transformation, said the other two divisions will also be kitted up with the latest equipment and undergo more battlefield experiments.
As the army continues to modernise, it will broaden its ability to handle operations inside and outside Singapore, he added.
These include reconstruction and peacekeeping operations in war-torn countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Timor Leste.
Maj-Gen Neo said he was certain that if the army had to be called upon to send combat soldiers to riskier areas with front- line situations, the troops would be prepared and ready.
He added: 'If I look at how we have performed in East Timor, Aceh and Afghanistan, I have no question, no doubt in my mind, that our people are able to fight.'
