<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to yesterday's article, '1,000 foreign-trained docs still not enough'.
It was mentioned that a new National Heart Centre will be built, and an artist's impression of the building was given.
From the picture, the building looks swanky and expensive, with a lot of tilted glass panels. Such a design is typically seen as trendy and probably more suited to a shopping centre in Orchard Road than a government institution to treat heart problems.
The glass panels look hard to maintain, with the faceted panels posing challenges to cleaners, thereby incurring higher maintenance costs in the future. It is also not environmentally friendly to have a prevalent glass skin which will add to the air-conditioning bill.
With the ground-breaking of the complex yesterday, the design was probably conceived a year ago before the current economic downturn, but is there a need for a trendy and expensive-looking building with so much glass? Daniel Chan
