Singapore to launch tougher public order law
Reuters

Singapore, which already has tough restrictions on freedom of assembly, plans to tighten them further ahead of a major Asia-Pacific summit in the city-state.

The Public Order Bill, introduced in parliament on Monday before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November, was needed to "squarely address gaps in the current framework to enhance the ability of the police to ensure security during major events", the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

Under the proposed law, police could prevent activists from leaving home if they knew they were going to a political rally. It would also allow police to order a person to leave an area if they determine he is about to break the law.

All outdoor activities that are cause-related will need a police permit, no matter how many people are involved. That is a change from the current law requiring a permit for gatherings of five or more people.

Opposition politicians and activists were quick to criticise the proposed law. "Even in communist China, peaceful protests are tolerated," said Chee Siok Chin of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party.

The bill allows police to stop people from filming law enforcement if it could put officers in danger. The bill cited live media coverage of Indian police trying to rescue hostages in the Mumbai attacks last November as posing risks to the officers.

Police could stop small peaceful protests against unpopular visiting government leaders, such as from Myanmar, if the law was introduced, activists said.

Last week, three Singaporeans tried to present a bouquet of orchids to visiting Myanmar Prime Minister Thein Sein for him to give to detained Myanmar opposition leader Aung Sann Suu Kyi.

Thein Sein was having an orchid named after him at the Botanical Gardens, a Singapore tradition for visiting heads of government.

The law is certain to pass, since the ruling People's Action Party has an overwhelming majority in parliament.

This is extremely, extremely worrying.

It is obvious that they are going to use these laws to help them win the next GE. Their Poodles will prevent people attending the rally. Their bureaucrats will not grant permits. People cannot film and put on yawningbread. They will sabo the opposition jialat and get another 66.6% win.

the new police power includes that the police can ask people to disperse before they can can commit crime, therefore, they can ask the people at the rally to disperse before they commit any crime,,,,,,

they are the new HEROES (in Heroes, we have Parkman, in Singapore we have F888man)

The tighter the controls, the bigger the backlash will be felt in terms of numbers of voters for the Opposition...

The people shall not be muffled by such dirty tactics!

If this is not a form of house arrest often used by the Burmese Junta then I don't know what is.

Well done 66.6% you further surrendered your rights and self castrated yourself by allowing the PAP to come up with such laws, let's see if the next Lehman Bros incident will see Sgeans not able to bring to bear the shady practices of big business in Sg.

Now, let's see if Sg's Supreme Court dares to over-turn such a law since it obviously infringes the freedom of movement, freedom to peaceful gathering and the freedom of expression this sadistically rapes and violates every sacred tenet of freedoms as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Super Poodle Farce has the authority to think for you and enforce action on thought crime, i.e., no actus reus is now needed, all you need is the mens rea - think of something that the Poodles think is a crime and you've had it.

I do hope Sgeans wake up soon enough. As for me, I don't give a rat's arse since I am leaving this fiefdom of the FamiLee very soon. For those of you who are stuck here, all I can do is wish you the best and do hope one day you realise that it's better to be free and live as a poor man than to be "rich" and always having to look over your shoulders for thinking about freedoms.

Cheers,

MentisMortis

Dear Lestat,

I am happy for you and glad that you have decided to do good by yourself and perhaps your family. I'd rather on any given day pay higher taxes etc to have a life that is stress free. The ever flip-flopping of the PAP and what they have been doing all these years have put me on my last slender string attached to this tiny island now filled with all sorts from crap to floatsum and jetsum to pure raw sewage and the PAP has the audacity to call them talents that this country needs.

They should just come clean and say that they allow all this rejects of humanity in here just to dilute the electorate and to render Sgeans powerless, defeated and their wills totally broken in the end.

Over the years, I have been uprooting my tree and now that it is ready for a transplant, I am in the midst of shipping it to my dream pasture of greener fields.

I congratulate you and wish you all the best in your search for a better life for you and yours.

Cheers,

MM

Dear Conan,

The symbolism of the orchid is quite funny, it has two meanings, one for the fact that orchids evolved from parasitic plants says a lot.

The other is that the orchid is also a symbol of beauty and hardiness it's ability to survive in adverse conditions is well known and documented.

I guess naming an orchid after a blood-thirsty General is just the PAP's way of bestowing credibility to what most nations regard Burma's govt as - an International Pariah that rivals only N. Korea, Sudan and perhaps Zimbabwe.

Now the General can go back to his country knowing full well that another despotic nation is indeed a good friend despite the oft used toothless cowardly pitbull cloak of ASEAN "constructive engagement".

The UN has tried this yet the junta refuses to budge and can SG really make a difference? Yes, unless and only if they freeze all that laundered and drug tainted money, but until then, all and sundry will be welcomed and have orchids named after them (remember Dendrobium Mugabe?).

Well done PAP, I just hope you've made more friends than enemies over the years for this will be ammunition that will be used in jest at you for a long time coming and it is really going to sting each time someone mentions this.

Cheers,

MM
