AMID an uncertain world, the People's Action Party wants to actively ensure that Singapore workers have a better future, said labour chief Lim Swee Say on Monday.
It will not just maintain Singapore's low unemployment rate but will ensure more women and older workers stay in the workforce, and ultimately raise wages for all, he said.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Manpower Ministry seminar, Mr Lim sought to explain what workers could take away from the PAP manifesto, titled 'Securing Our Future Together', unveiled on Sunday.
His remarks came in the wake of a warning from global finance chiefs at the close of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings on the weekend that the world is 'one shock away from another global crisis' because of rising food prices, continuing joblessness, Middle East turmoil and weak finances in advance economies.
Said Mr Lim: 'On one hand, we're excited about the many opportunities coming our way as the world goes through this new round of globalisation. At the same time we are quite mindful that what we have today, we might not have in the future unless we work very hard together.'
Mr Lim said the party not only wants to protect what it has achieved, but will also 'go on the offensive' to ensure that workers have a better future.
