Singapore to hold anti-terror drill; simulate Mumbai attack
Sun Jul 5, 2009

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore will hold its biggest anti-terror drill on Monday, simulating the deadly Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people last year, ahead of hosting an Asia-Pacific summit in November.

Exercise North Star VII will involve 2,000 participants from 15 state agencies and media outlets and simulate situations such as concerted terror attacks on hotels, malls and an underground train station, the Singapore Police Force said in a statement.

The exercise, based on November's Mumbai attacks, consists of 10 incidents, from the hijack of a taxi cab in a raid on a hotel to a rampage at a train station, according to plans seen by Reuters.

Singapore, home to regional offices of global firms, the world's busiest sea port and a top regional airport hub, has been safe from a militant sabotage so far, after it foiled a plot to hijack a plane and crash it into the Changi airport in 2002.

Mas Selamat Kastari, the alleged mastermind of the foiled plot and suspected leader of a Singapore radical Islamist group linked to the 2002 Bali bombings, was arrested in Malaysia in April after he escaped from a Singapore jail in February 2008.

The island-state will host an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit (APEC) in November.

The Singapore Police said the anti-terror drill was not related to the security preparation for the summit, which will host leaders of economic heavy-hitters as the United States, Japan, China and Russia.

The exercise will be in two phases -- July 6-7 and July 15, in which Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will preside over the finale at the resort island of Sentosa, the police said.

When accountant Lin Ting wants a massage, she picks up the phone and calls her regular masseuse who makes house calls.
It sounds pretty decadent to have a massage in the comfort of one's own home but Miss Lin pays $50 for an hour-long session. That is about $30 to $50 less than what she would have to fork out if she went to a beauty parlour.
The 27-year-old, who lives in a condominium in Grange Road, says she saves even more if she factors in transport costs and parking charges.
She says: 'Why would you go out when you can have a massage in the comfort of your own home?'
These days, you can get everything from a haircut to a workout to a car wash without leaving the house - and more importantly, at competive prices.
You can even get someone to pick up your dead pet, cremate it and deliver the ashes to you.
Service providers say busy Singaporeans are discovering the convenience of house visits and business has picked up.
Manicurist Halinah Shariff, 20, has been getting five new clients every month since she started attending to them at their homes last year.
While customers like the convenience, service providers say being mobile helps them cut overhead costs.
A spokesman for dog massage therapy company Pawsitive Sensations, which closed its shop to become a solely mobile service in April, says: 'House calls made up 80 per cent of our business. By closing our shop at Turf City, we saved on rental, and electricity and water bills.'
Service professionals like the flexibility of going mobile. They can fit their clients into their own schedules.
Some are young mothers while others juggle day jobs as well.
Manicurist Meslina Jumahat, 33, who has been making house calls for 13 years, says she can turn away clients when she needs to run personal errands.
When she worked at a nail salon, she found herself rushing through jobs when business was brisk. Now she can dictate her pace of work.
Personal trainer Chung Tze Khit, 24, sees three to four clients a day and says he would be able to pack in at least four more clients if he had his own commercial gym.
Going to clients' homes means that he has to factor in travelling time between appointments.
But then, there are clients such as housewife Jane Teo, 45, who does not like the idea of sweating it out in a gym packed with people. Her personal trainer goes to her terrace house in Hougang twice a week.
For $80 a session, she gets a cardioworkout which sometimes includes jogging around her housing estate and weight-training exercises with small dumb-bells and a fitball in her front patio.
She says: 'I do not like crowds and am quite shy about meeting people at the gym.'
Finance and human resource manager Magdalena Koh, who is in her late 30s, pays $50 for a car groomer to go to her condominium in River Valley to wash and polish her Audi A4.
She says other car groomers charge at least $80 and they try to persuade her into signing packages.
She adds: 'Convenience is the main reason because we work late during the week. Our weekends are very precious.'
