Bukit Batok MP David Ong
PAP announced yesterday (20 Aug) that that the incumbent MP David Ong, will
be its candidate to contest the Bukit Batok SMC at the upcoming GE.
Mr Ong is the Managing Director of RedDot Publishing Inc Pte Ltd, according
to the Parliament website.
On RedDot Publishing’s website [Link], Mr Ong is said to have very
close working relationship with the Singapore Tourism Board as well as SIA:
“RedDot Publishing Inc. is the leading publisher of tourism maps and
guides since 1997. We have collaborated closely with Singapore Tourism Board as
well as our tourism industry partners by consistently producing quality maps and
guides. The last 15 years have seen the worst and best in the tourism sector.
When the tourism industry was severely hit during the crisis of post 911 and
SARS, RedDot stayed committed in supporting STB and the industry with our RedDot
maps.
Over the years, RedDot has demonstrated its proactivity in taking a
leadership role in producing tourism collateral that meets the evolving needs of
our visitors and tourists. Time and again, we have taken business risks in the
development of new products such as Medicine Maps for the Russian and Indonesian
markets, shopping maps, drivers map for Malaysians amongst others. We have, to
date, published 15 titles for our visitors. Singapore Airlines has also awarded
the publishing of their SIA Hop On
Guide to RedDot with the added responsibility of developing and maintaining
the interactive SIA Hop-On
website.”
In a recent article in the Chinese media, Mr Ong claimed that his 12 years of
service in grassroots organizations helps him personally understand the problems
faced by Bukit Batok residents (‘MP Ong: I understand Bt Batok residents’ problems‘).
He said, “I have served in these grassroots organizations for 12 years,
albeit different constituencies with different conditions. In terms of related
experience, it helps me understand the residents’ problems better.”
Mr Ong first ran as a PAP candidate for Bukit Batok ward as part of Jurong
GRC in the last GE.
Prior to this, he was Assistant Treasurer of Kolam Ayer CCC (Citizens
Consultative Committee) from Jalan Besar GRC. Subsequently, he became Chairman
of Kreta Ayer–Kim Seng CCC.
In the upcoming election, voters in Bukit Batok SMC will, for the first time
in many years, have the chance to exercise their right of choice of MP,
independent of the voters in the other wards that make up Jurong GRC.
SDP has indicated that it will return to contest Bukit Batok SMC. SDP almost
won in Bukit Batok SMC, garnering 48.2% of the valid votes at the GE1991.
Thereafter, PAP Govt subsumed Bukit Batok into a GRC for subsequent GEs:
Will Bukit Batok residents continue to vote for PAP this time? Only time will
tell.
