An MP has openly slammed a maid agency for disregarding the safety of its workers.
Mr Alex Yam, the Member of Parliament for Chua Chu Kang, had stopped briefly at a traffic light near the new 122 Katong mall, when he witnessed a passenger van crammed full of maids.
The MP wrote on his Facebook page, "En route to a meeting on 16 Feb, a passenger van pulled up next to me and made me do a double take".
According to Mr Yam, there appeared to be 30 maids crammed into a van meant for 10 to 12 people.
Mr Yam described the predicament of the maids, "Some were bent over standing at the back of the van, others were leaning heavily on each other".
Indignant at the treatment of the workers, he added, "No one in their right mind should be transporting people this way!".
Netizen 'Alvin Teow' agrees with the MP, and suggests that Mr Yam should report this to the traffic police, while the Ministry of Manpower should revoke the company's license.
