The Democratic Party of Japan thrashed the long governing Liberal Democratic Party in last year GE making it the first change of ruling power in Japan after WWII.

Yukio Hatoyama, the new Japan PM was a former LDP lawmaker. Democratic Party current House of Representatives lineup has lots of former LDP lawmakers who defected over to the party.

Internal splits or factional breakaway are usually how long governing ruling parties fall from power.
