Singapore no longer top of least-corrupt countries

Singapore is no longer the leading country for the least-corrupt nations in the world.

It fell four positions to become the fifth least-corrupt nation in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index.

The Index is released annually by non-governmental corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI).

Singapore's score of 9.2 points out of a possible 10 still makes it the least corrupt in Asia.

The index ranked 183 countries by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. Scores between one and 10 are also assigned to countries, one being highly corrupt and 10 being least-corrupt.

Singapore shared the top spot with Denmark and New Zealand last year, each with 9.3 points.

Analysts interviewed by The Straits Times said that despite the dip in score, Singapore's reputation for a clean government remains intact.

Mr Liao Ran, who oversees TI's rankings for East Asia, told the national daily that the 0.1 dip is hardly significant.

He said that it could have been caused by slight changes to how the surveys were conducted or by differences in how Singapore fared in a few polls out of the 17 business and expert surveys that TI used for its rankings

He pointed out that a significant drop would be of about 0.3 point or more.

New Zealand, with a score of 9.5, topped this year's list while Denmark and Finland tied for second place, each with a score of 9.4.

Sweden ranked just above Singapore with 9.3 points.

You dont need corruption if the govt doesnt have any resistance to take things from you and do as they please with tax payers money and state investment, It will also help that govt and civil servants can pay themselves very well to avoid being corrupt.

i think all human being tend to be a little corrupt. who can say when opposition take over, they will not line up their pocket like pap? the only reason they complain now of gov corruption is because money not reaching them. once it does, they will sing a different tune.

Anarcho-capitalism will render the concept of corruption obsolete.

"7. Section 82 (1)(d) provides that - "No person shall wait outside any polling station on polling day, except for the purpose of gaining entry to the polling station to cast his vote".

8. Plainly, persons found waiting inside the polling stations do not come within the ambit of this section. Similarly, those who enter or have entered the polling station cannot be said to be waiting outside it. Only those who wait outside the polling station commit an offence under this section unless they are waiting to enter the polling station to cast their votes."

Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong.

Taken over from the former Chief Justice Yong Pung How on 11 April 2006.

First claim to fame was in 1997 as Attorney-General of Singapore, when ruled in favor of members of the People's Action Party after members of the Workers' Party claimed the PAP flouted the Parliamentary Election Act which states "no unauthorized persons to loiter within 200 meters of polling stations on polling day" did not apply as they (PAP MPs) were not loitering outside but were instead inside the polling station. It was therefore his view that although it was an offense to be loitering within 200 meters of a polling station, it is not an offense to be in the polling station.

Corrosive corruption

A correlation between corruption and development

THE use of public office for private gain benefits a powerful few while imposing costs on large swathes of society. Transparency International's annual Corruption Perceptions Index, published on December 1st, measures the perceived levels of public-sector graft by aggregating independent surveys from across the globe. Just five non-OECD countries make the top 25: Singapore, Hong Kong, Barbados, Bahamas and Qatar. The bottom is formed mainly of failed states, poor African countries and nations that either were once communist (Turkmenistan) or are still run along similar lines (Venezuela, Cuba). Comparing the corruption index with the UN's Human Development Index (a measure combining health, wealth and education), demonstrates an interesting connection. When the corruption index is between approximately 2.0 and 4.0 there appears to be little relationship with the human development index, but as it rises beyond 4.0 a stronger connection can be seen. Outliers include small but well-run poorer countries such as Bhutan and Cape Verde, while Greece and Italy stand out among the richer countries.

Sweden ranked just above Singapore with 9.3 points.

You are either sick or retarded. If Singapore is corrupt, then Sweden is just as corrupt. What about the rest of the 150 countries which are way below Singapore or Sweden? No country on this Earth has 10 points - in case you can't read.

The moment you are born you are already sinful - go repent! Carry kavadi up Batu Cave if necessary. The next life you may be reincarnated into a serpent.
