In parliament yesterday, I gather WP's Slyvia queried whether the presence of foreign workers contributed to "wage stagflation and holding employers back from training workers", by citing reports from MOM and IPS.

MOM acting minister Gan apparently said it was "simplistic" to draw this conclusion, as job's wages depended on other factors, such as its value and skills. For instance, in the services sector, which had "a growing number of foreign workers", wages grew by 6.5% last year. Also both foreign employment and employer-supported training grew from 2002 to 2006.

Is this actually reflected amongst the low skill low wage Singapore group of workers?

I like "simplistic view", easy to understand. People makes it complicated to confuse the public.

True,

In a business world, they have this motto called: KISS (Keep it simple & sweet)

In feng shui world, simplicity means abundance.

In school, complicated answer will not score points as compared to one that is simple but hit the mark.

In hawker center, people sell simple tasty mee siam without adding hum.

I think Mr Gan should pay careful attention to what Sylvia Lim was saying. She was referring to wages at the lower end of the pay scale, not to overall wages.

Mr Gan also claimed that during a recession, foreign workers would be retrenched faster than Singaporean workers, but his claim has yet to be empirically tested in a real life recession. Talk is cheap.

Why would there be an incentive for companies to retrench foreigners first during a recession, when there is no legislation governing this aspect of employment, and no monetary incentives awarded for such acts?

Foreigners, if they are without families in Singapore, would in fact be in a better position to bargain for less pay in exchange for keeping their jobs, as compared to local workers who might have mouths to feed in high-cost Singapore.

As usual, the government’s obsession with overall statistics clouds the real issue of the poor and lower-income households being the first to bear the brunt of rising inflation and an overly-liberal policy of importing large numbers of foreign workers, many of them unskilled.

Slyvia went into paliment thru her own

Gan hide behind ministers.

Who is simple?

this is exactly what i call a 'simplistic statement'.. no brains GKY.

Overall I think the gov is more right than wrong. Foreigners must pick up the rejected jobs with the minmium salary and Singaporean must be one step above them. So Sporean must be trained. Those who are stuborn, resigned that they are too old to be trained, poor work attitudes and always complaining about working deserved to be where they are ie fighting for a place with the foreigners in the lowest rung.

Gan probably knew where Slyvia was coming from, that is why he lamely tried to fudge the issue and patronise her which is typical PAP style when they have difficulty rebutting cogent rational arguments.

Kudos to Slyvia this time round. I think in this sitting she is doing a pretty good job.

Is that the best he can say? To claim Sylvia's queries to be simplistic without doing a proper study to gather the real impact foreign workers have on the wages of Singaporeans in the bottom 20% of the income bracket. I still fail to rational how the presence of foreign workers working in that job sector do not depress wages. I say MP GAN's words are "SIMPLISTIC".

Gan Kim Yong is an evil snake that spit at its enemy and than run away from a losing battle. So much of him being a loser man and silvia lim a woman hero.
