Two die in Jurong shipyard explosion
AN EXPLOSION at a shipyard in Jurong yesterday afternoon killed two foreign workers and injured several others.
The blast occurred at No. 3 Benoi Road, in a shipyard occupied by Haosen Marine, at about 1.30pm.
The two workers, a 43-year-old Malaysian and a 20-year-old Bangladeshi, died at the scene.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) revealed that the workers were checking tank compartments of a barge for leaks just before the blast.
MOM added that some workers suffered minor injuries in the blast but no one was hospitalised.
An office worker who was in a building across the road told my paper that he heard a loud sound.
"I thought it was thunder and that it was going to rain heavily," he said.
MOM said that it has ordered a stop to all work at the site and that it is investigating the incident.
