S'poreans in Shanghai celebrate National Day
SINGAPORE: On their country's 45th birthday on August 9, it's a regular working day for Singaporeans living in Shanghai.
But in order not to miss the celebrations, the community held an early birthday bash.
They came dressed in red and white, all ready to celebrate National Day.
Singing the national anthem and reciting the pledge, Singaporeans living in Shanghai were determined to celebrate the country's birthday a day earlier.
Making this possible was the Singapore Consulate in Shanghai and the Overseas Singaporean Unit.
Consul General of the Republic of Singapore to Shanghai, Yip Wee Kiat said: "I think especially for Singaporeans who are based overseas, it's very important that they keep the connection and this applies especially to the young ones. Because they grow up outside of Singapore and they don't have that close connection. We thought it is very important for us to organise a community only event to let the young ones feel the connection to Singapore."
Student Tiong Tian Lin said: "I've been here for five months and I miss the food the most, and me celebrating National Day away from home makes me feel more patriotic."
Banker Sebastian Er said: "I've been here for a year and I miss the food and miss celebrating National Day in Singapore."
And Singapore cuisine was exactly what they got - from ngoh hiang to nasi lemak and bandung, it was a hearty meal.
They were also entertained by home grown music group BY-2.
But the highlight of the celebration was the goody bag and watching the National Day Parade full-dress rehearsal.
A total of about 150 Singaporeans and their families attended the birthday bash. There's over 13,000 Singaporeans currently living in China and shanghai has the largest concentration of them with over 7000.
