SINGAPORE: Singapore's passport has reclaimed the top spot on the 2019 Henley Passport Index, alongside Japan and South Korea, residence and citizenship consultancy Henley & Partners announced in a press release on Thursday (Mar 28).

The latest edition of the rankings consolidate 12 months of Asian dominance, with the three Asian countries boasting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 189 destinations.

In October last year, Japan edged out Singapore, after being neck-and-neck since they both climbed to first place in February.

Last year's title-holder Germany has been pushed to second with a score of 188, following a visa-exemption from Uzbekistan. Five other European countries share third place on the index: Denmark, Finland, France, Italy and Sweden.

The United Kingdom is at fifth place with a score of 185, while the United States slipped down to sixth, settling for a five-way tie with Belgium, Canada, Greece and Ireland.

The Malaysian passport remains the second most powerful passport in Southeast Asia, even as it dropped in rank from 12th last quarter to 13th with a score of 177.

As in previous years, Iraq and Afghanistan hold the bottom spot on the index, with only 30 destinations accessible to their citizens.

Henley & Partners managing partner Dominic Volek said: “A snapshot at the index’s top 20 today compared to what it was 20 years ago, tells an interesting story.

"European countries dominated the index then and were immovable ... but today’s top 20 has seen significant movements especially in the last several years. The European countries have been surely but steadily dropping down the ranks as Asian countries improve to take their place."

He added: “You only need to look at Singapore, between 2009 and 2019, to see it has improved by more than 30 score points to rise from eight place to joint first place."

Meanwhile, South Korea improved by nearly 40 points to rise from 13th place to joint first.
The Henley Passport Index is a ranking of all the passports of the world according to the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.

It is updated in real-time, as and when visa-policy changes come into effect, according to Henley and Partners.

The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association and in-house research.

I thought the top spot was occupied by the German passport for several years.

A passport is just a document to facilitate international travel. A 'better' passport just saves you the hassle of having to go to a certain country's embassy to meet grumpy consular workers and apply for a visa.

it is not about power, but may be less inconvenience as you SG passport holders do not have to pay and apply for visa.
What is the point of being number one, when there are so many financially poor senior citizens struggling to live a decent life.

PEE SAI Passport is WORLD MOST UGLY! From cover to interior all fucked up! Not just UGLY, but POOR QUALITY! POOR DURABILITY!

Photo quality Black & White ! When Singaporeans clear CUSTOM IMMIGRATION with a foreign maid, the whole stack of passport together past to immigration at car window you will see the MAID's Passport ALWAYS more presentable and nice and neat than Singaporean's == FUCKING SHAME!

Singapore Passport spoils easily especially if you regularly put inside a rear jean pocket, sitting down, it will bent and break and tear.

I had one of these rotten condition passport and at several immigration counters almost get refused entry. The fucking foreigner immigration even suspected that I broke the passport to fraud a faked photo or something. Spent fucking 15 mins, looking at my passport every page by page and using MAGNIFYING GLASS to check the damaged area, asked me tons of strange question which I don't know don't remember - like when was my as trip to where, when I had previous visited his country, when I had last been to USA or using which older passport, when was this renewed, where issued etc etc. How the fuck would I remember so many fucking years of my long travel history & old passports???

KNN! PAP passport?!! PUI! Fuck Spider 3rd fucking world Paria SHIT HOLE PASSPORT!

One of the many items in the recent flurry of good news. Surely everyone knows why.

This actually means Singapore is world #1 SUCKER COUNTRY, everyone see Singaporeans as BIG PERFECT SUCKERS and MOST WELCOMED to visit as much as possible. You are ROBERTS! 菜头! Softee CAQ PUSSIES! You are the EASIEST TO BULLY EXPLOIT & CHEAT! That is what it means! NOBODY IS AFRAID NOR WORRIED ABOUT Sucker Sinkees, not seen as a threat.

The only thing Sinkee will do is to go GIVE BIRTH AND ABANDON LITTLE SINKEE BABY CORPSE in TRASH BIN!

That's all!

MAGA!

It had better be very powerful, considering the hefty price we are paying the government.

The most powerful passport = the most loose country. Anyone can come here and rape the country. That's why there are a million Ah Nehs and more are coming. Which country in the world allows that many Ah Nehs in their country and steal the jobs per capita? Only in SINKapore.

If the Malaysia passport is ranked highly it's a glaring example of the fact that the rankings mean shit.

The Malaysian passport remains the second most powerful passport in Southeast Asia, even as it dropped in rank from 12th last quarter to 13th with a score of 177

That's actually a indictment of the other SE Asian countries.

Malaysian passports are quite alright, although Malaysians need to manually apply for a visa when visiting certain countries.
