PE: Counting of overseas votes completed
Posted: 31 August 2011 1731 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Elections Department said the counting of the overseas votes for the Presidential Election has been completed.

In all, there were 3,376 overseas voters.

President-elect Dr Tony Tan received the most votes, at 1296, Dr Tan Cheng Bock had 1183 votes, Mr Tan Jee Say had 709, and Mr Tan Kin Lian had 184.

Voting pattern for overseas votes is similar to that of local votes, with Dr Tony Tan taking 38 per cent of the vote, Dr Tan Cheng Bock took 35 per cent, Mr Tan Jee Say was at 21 per cent and Mr Tan Kin Lian was at 0.55 per cent.

Returning Officer Yam Ah Mee said that he would like to thank the more than 20,000 election officials who participated in the exercise from Nomination Day to the Polling Day to the counting process.

He said the efficiency of the officials allowed the 2.13 million local votes to be counted.

Although the overseas votes had no impact on the outcome of the election, both Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock turned up at the People's Association Headquarters this afternoon to witness the counting.

Dr Tony Tan thanked all the overseas voters who turned up to cast their vote while Dr Tan Cheng Bock expressed that he was pleasantly surprised at the result as he expected Dr Tony Tan to garner a higher percentage of overseas votes.

It must be rigged. Overseas votes same as local? Big bullshit.

This is ridiculous.

3800 overseas voters?

There are 150,000 overseas Singaporeans. What happened to the 146,000+?

I suspect that the 146,000 are living too far away from the polling centres and can't be bothered to vote, since they would have left SG due to their frustration at the govt and the system anyway.

On the other hand, the 3,800 are likely to be mostly diplomats and civil servants working in the embassies, or those who are members of Singapore Associations (which are sort of affiliated to the embassies)

Looks like TT got ~3.5% more from overseas votes, TJS ~4% less, TKL ~0.5% more

I have a few friends and family overseas, none of them voted because the polling station was too far and it's just not worth the trouble and money to go down when their one vote is not likely to matter.

The results show that there is a strong positive correlation between how overseas voters poll and how the rest of the populace voted.

Come'on lah ... sample size so small ... percentages mean nothing. E.g. if there are 20 votes and Tony gets 8, Cheng Bock 6, Jee Say 5 and Kin Lian 1, Tony will get 40%, Cheng Bock 30%, Jee Say 25% and Kin Lian 5%.

It's true most Singaporeans live away from the Embassies and HCs...

And why bother with overseas voting when YAM declared the winner from local votes?

Given that Singapore is supposed to be so advanced, why must overseas voters travel to the embassies or HCs? How about electronic voting?

I agree except for members of Singapore Associations.(SA's)
Mabye the committe/exco members (usually businessmen) likely to vote TT as many become officials of SA's to raise their profile and/or rub shoulders with visiting Sillipore ministers.

However ordinary members not necessarily pro PAP .Most join to meet fellow countrymen and for social reasons.

Actually, the overseas voters could have made a difference if the overseas students voted--most are anti-PAP.

That said, it would place the SDP guy TJS as second place.

Some polling stations are quite close to the city so expect higher turnout e.g. Beijing.

If the Singaporeans in Beijing dont vote PAP, the PAP would triple the number of PRC immigrants

Only 5,500 of the eligible overseas voters even bothered to register to vote.

Sample size of N=3.3k is actually quite large (considering that opinion polling often use 1k samples for 3% confidence interval), the confidence interval for N=3376 is +/- ~1.61%
TT's and TJS's numbers actually fall outside of the confidence interval, so it can be concluded that the oversea's voters preference for TT and TJS is significantly different from local population.

I'm not a stats expert though, maybe TKL may want to check on my numbers :D

based on local vote: TCB: ±35%, TJS: ±25%, TT: 35%++, TKL: ±5%
its quite clear that the pool of pro-PAP voters r slightly stronger than pro-Opp voters. there's also a significant portion of conservative fence sitters that dont mind a little change. of which, its beyond doubt that there's also a fraction that vote blindly based on vested interests (need not extrapolate who they are)

based on overseas votes, TT became the runaway leader & TJS's votes reduced. its even more obvious who's camp those voters r from. what jobs do they hold? very likely; civil office, liaisons for GLCs, scholars etc.
