SINGAPORE: An optometrist who sold more than 100 boxes of fake contact lenses was fined S$30,000 on Wednesday.
Twenty-seven-year-old Neo Teck Soon worked at optical shop "H2Hub" at the time of the offences, which happened in April 2011.
He had bought 100 boxes of the fake lenses bearing the trademark "Freshlook Colorblends" from 30-year-old Koh Peng Kiat.
Koh, an owner of optical shop "Eye Cottage" had owed Neo money.
The court heard that it was Koh who had suggested to Neo, the idea of buying the fake lenses at S$10 a box.
The agreed price was less than half the cost of a box of real lenses. A box of real lenses cost S$22.
The plan was for Neo to supply the rip-offs to another optical shop, and for the profit to be shared between Neo and Koh.
The district judge fined Neo S$200 for each of the 100 boxes of fake lenses. Neo was fined another S$10,000, under the Health Products Act for supplying 40 pairs of counterfeit lenses.
Neo is the second of seven men to be convicted.
The first man involved in the case was convicted in February.
A third man has claimed trial, while four others have been issued warnings.
