Rift widens between SDA leaders and Chiam
By Kor Kian Beng & Zakir Hussain

LEADERS of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) yesterday rejected their chairman Chiam See Tong's decision to appoint a new secretary-general and backed incumbent Desmond Lim instead.

They also rebuffed Mr Chiam's efforts over the past year to bring Reform Party (RP) into the SDA fold, saying the negotiations were conducted without the official nod of the alliance leaders.

These moves will further deepen the rift in the three-party grouping, which has been weakened recently when Mr Chiam and Mr Lim fell out over plans to let RP into the alliance.

Mr Chiam, veteran MP for Potong Pasir, was not present at the two-hour meeting involving leaders of the two component parties: Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) and Singapore Justice Party (SJP).

He was informed of the meeting last Saturday by SDA leaders but his wife Lina Chiam told them yesterday afternoon he would not be attending.

Two leaders from Mr Chiam's Singapore People's Party (SPP), however, were at the meeting which was chaired by SDA's vice-chairman and PKMS chief Ali Asjadi. It was attended by 11 of the 15 council members.

Mr Lim came out of the meeting looking victorious and chaired the subsequent media conference. He told reporters that in future, any discussion to bring in new political parties has to be approved first by SDA's supreme executive council.

He will be the chief negotiator for such talks, he said, as he spelt out the conditions for newcomers to the alliance.

They will be put on a four-year probation period during which they cannot sit on the council or have voting rights.

'Any party that wants to join us must not impose any conditions but they should respect and comply with our Constitution,' he said.

He also said that RP, led by Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam, has not officially applied to join the SDA.

'Whatever discussions Mr Jeyaretnam has had with Mr Chiam were in their own personal capacity,' he added, saying that Mr Chiam did not seek the SDA council's approval for the talks.

Mr Lim said the SDA is now in talks with two opposition parties who have agreed to the conditions.

Sources say the two are Singapore Democratic Party led by Dr Chee Soon Juan and the newly formed Socialist Front headed by Mr Ng Teck Siong.

When asked what was next in store for Mr Chiam, Mr Lim said he would have to abide by the council's decision.

'Any decision made by the majority is final and conclusive,' he added.

Mr Chiam could not be contacted last night on his plan of action.

The latest development comes at a time of heightened election fever following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's announcement last Saturday that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee has been formed.

But Mr Lim said the latest episode will not slow SDA's plans to ramp up preparations for the election, including monthly discussions with other political parties on national policy issues.

if the opp is serious in wresting more seats from PAP, the first thing to do is to show a united front and pool resources to contest a GRC.

Already before the war starts, infighting begins.

How to win like that?

SDA is a convenient coalition vehicle around Chiam who is a sitting MP to contest in GRCs and as a sort of branding tag. No one else is known or has the gravitas in SDA or other component parties. Without SPP or Chiam, it is not going anywhere.

Its the same reason why RP wants to join forces not with SDA but with Chiam and SPP. If the SDA was the attraction, KJ would be talking to the SDA council in the first.

Not that Chiam is excellent or fantastic as a drawcard but he is what is left.

If the source is true, then I can see how SDA is going to fail. Epic fail written all over:(

The ultimate dream team - SDP, SF and SDA. Now all they need now are Yap Keng Ho and Gopalan, one on each side leading the procession at the annual fantasy parade. Desmond, Chee, Chia, Aminuddin and Ali Asjadi, each wearing a sash and twirling batons on a revolving platform mounted on a lorry.

Nah, I don't think so. How that part came about baffles me. The SDP will never join anything that requires it to forgo its name. It is too proud. You will get at most an SDP-USD alliance with USD being an empty shell sister.

The SF would also not be inserted into any alliance because it boasts socialist credentials that it deems other parties do not have. True or not, that is other's "pa sa".

The factions of opposition would look more like the below:

SDP-USD alliance

RP-SPP alliance

SDA without (most part of) SPP

SF by itself

SDP by itself

NSP by itself

WP by itself

Don't be fooled by the occasional opposition leader with the usual mantra "oh, we have close ties/good relations/friendly with each other", "oh, we keep in touch", "we're open", or "we exploring ways to work together" etc. All these will not come to any pass like the past 10 elections have shown. It's the opposition's way of fooling the people election after election, the lesser and less poisonous version of PAP's fooling people over the SingTel shares and NSS/ERS nonsense.

When Chinese want over turn Mongolian Empire, Rightful Famous Alliance and unwelcome Orthodox Alliance had internal problem. Both side had different view, in the same time both side internal problem too.

There will a rightful people to lead both side to over turn the Mongolian Empire, after victory it will follow by leader to manage the country.

The current situation is the PKMS shall continue support each party to contest in GE 100% seats.

The leader will be elected after GE in Parliament House.

Unwelcome Orthodox Alliance, with many leaders opposition = SDP, SPP, PKMS. NSP, SF, USD and SJP

Who can elected to Parliament?

Who can contest in Parliament Election still too early.

At least the WP is honest. When asked to join others/work closely/form an alliance, they just say "NO!".

Dr Anthony,

I am so glad that you realize that if the opposition wants to form the govt, they will have to form a coalition govt.

Do you know how many seats they contested last GE. Not really 100%, you know

Chiam cannot afford to have SPP expelled from the SDA.

That is the problem with Chiam See Tong. He thinks that since he is the chairman of SDA, he can suka-suka do as he likes! No need to consult others.

The same as when he was with the SDP. Wants everything his way. He alone is supreme and wants veto power. No consideration for others. A man who thinks too highly of himself... that without him, all will come to nought!

We must truth Mr Low Thia Kiang and Mr Goh Meng Seng words:-

1) Mr Low will fill his candidate at North and East.

2) Mr Goh will fill 30 candidate

I do not think USD, SDP, SF and SPP are joking to contest. Each has one GRC maybe with some SMC

The RP are trying to be the best and strong party. They try to over take SDA, WP and NSP. NSP can fill 30 candidate, RP also want to fill 30 candidate.

This infighting will be the addon anmo PAP needs to show trhe voters that opposition politicans are not interested in grassroot welfare but only on their own wekfare.

I however do wonder how did SDP come into been for jkoining up any form of alliance is not going to happen unless SDP takes the lead and Chee and his ego would perfer that. As of now, if SDP were to join SDA, dun thuink Chee would like to go under desmond, both cant tolerate each other.

its always like tht nt the 1st time, gun shld be pointing outwards all the time nt inwards, nvr aim @ any of ur own pple. Duoergun has a wise saying "if we fight among ourselves internally, ming wld nvr be conquered' iNDEED without wise leadership from duoergun ming may be harder to fight afterall there r internal diff between men like duoergun and haoge, jierhalang etc. it is only when ming is overthrown then he start to deal with his internal enemies.
