SINGAPORE: The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has suspended the membership of the person who ran the NUS Atheist Society Facebook page, a party spokesperson said on Saturday (Mar 21).

The spokesperson said that Mr Jan Chan had earlier admitted to the party that he was behind the Facebook page.

The Progress Singapore Party is not linked to the NUS Atheist Society,” said the party in a public statement it posted on its Facebook page.

The party added that it “views the behaviour of all our members very seriously and will endeavour to ensure that all members keep within the boundaries of the law”.

It will decide what further steps to take once investigations are completed, the spokesperson said, adding that he will not be allowed to take part in any party-sanctioned activities during this period.

Mr Chan had been a member since January this year, and he had participated in several walkabouts, the spokesperson said.

On Friday, the police said they were investigating after a Facebook page titled NUS Atheist Society put up a post suggesting the Bible and the Quran as alternatives to be used in the event of toilet paper shortages.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Friday that it had received a number of complaints about the post.

It had asked Facebook to disable access to the "religiously offensive post" and highlighted "the importance of racial and religious harmony in our society".

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam also said that the Facebook post was "very offensive" towards Muslims and Christians.

Mr Shanmugam in his Facebook post said: "We take a serious view of these type of statements."

In a Facebook post on Friday, the National University of Singapore (NUS) said it has "no relationship" with the NUS Atheist Society and that the Facebook page is not affiliated to the university.

NUS said it had reported the NUS Atheist Society page to Facebook twice - once in 2019, and again on Mar 19, 2020. On both occasions, NUS requested that Facebook look into the legitimacy of the account.

The social media company has since disabled access to the post.

That's a common problem facing all non-WP parties in Singapore. Anyone who isn't PAP and is serious in becoming an MP or at least support parliamentary/town council management work instead of a fly by night politician would have joined WP as this is the only platform that can provide the relevant experience.

All the other parties are therefore left with scrapping the bottom of the barrel in terms of talent. You either keep your standards high up and see your party wither and die due to dwindling membership or lower your quality and let in all sorts of ill-disciplined jokers/mavericks. The day Tan Cheng Bock failed to convince any heavyweight PAP ex-colleagues to join him has already set PSP on the inevitable fate of fading into political oblivion.

For PSP to grow,,it needs to become bigger than Ah Bock,,,and no political party is perfect,,even the pap,,,since PSP is a growing party,,,PSP needs to be more selective about its recruitment policies,,,WP is also strict about it,,,so hopefully PSP will just scrub off this bump on the road

Jason Neo's posting

Jason Neo's posting

A member of the public has posted a query with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) over a four-year old incident involving a former Young PAP (YPAP) member.
Mr Paul Chen, posting on the SPF’s Facebook page on Tuesday, was referring to the incident involving then YPAP member, Jason Neo, in 2011.
Mr Neo had posted online a photo he had taken of a school bus with Malay children from Huda Kindergarten, in Woodlands. The children were dressed in their uniform which includes traditional Malay headwear.
Mr Neo captioned the photo: “Bus filled with young terrorist trainees?”

His post went viral and caused a huge uproar of protests from many Singaporeans and members of the public.

Two PAP Members of Parliament who were also YPAP leaders had to later tender their apologies personally to the school.
Under public pressure, Mr Neo later resigned from the YPAP altogether.
He had also issued an “unreserved apology” to the Muslim community.
At least three police reports were made against Mr Neo then, and the police were reported to be investigating the incident.
However, as Mr Chen pointed out, it has been four years since and no updates from the authorities on the investigations seem to have been provided.
Mr Chen’s query with the SPF compared Mr Neo’s case with that of the more recent one involving 16-year old Amos Yee, who was charged on Tuesday for a video criticising Christianity and ridiculing former Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
“I would like to applaud SPF for the swift action against Amos Yee who made insensitive remarks against the religious in his youtube video which he posted some days ago,” Mr Yee told the police. “I understood that one of the charges he faced is section 298 of penal code…”
“I do understand the rationale behind this charge,” Mr Chen said. “However, there is another case which happened more than 3 years ago which involved a former YPAP member who made a racist remark on Muslim kids. I am sure his remarks hurt a lot of Muslim feelings. A few police reports were made against Jason Neo the person who made the remarks but as of now, there is no feed back from the I/O.”
He was referring to the police officer in charge of the Neo case.
“My question is, how come the time taken by the SPF to take action against these two persons [Yee and Neo] is so much different considering both of them committed the same crime under section 298 penal code (if i understand the penal code correctly)?”
Mr Chen concluded:
“I believe in the professionalism of SPF in carry out their duties fairly and equally regardless of who committed the crime. Looking forward to your reply soon.”
You can read his post on the SPF Facebook page here.
“If Amos Yee is being charged under section 298 penal code, then I am sure all the more Jason Neo should be charged under this code too,” Mr Chen told The Online Citizen (TOC).
“Jason Neo racist remarks are worse than what Amos has said.”

Another case in 2013 involved former NTUC assistant director of membership, Amy Cheong, who was an Australian citizen and a Singapore permanent resident.
Ms Cheong had posted a racist rant online where she disparaged Malays for what she perceived to be their low-cost and lengthy void-deck weddings, and also mocked their divorce rate.
She was eventually issued a “stern warning” by the authorities.
Ms Cheong has since returned to Australia.

That's the theory everyone knows, but reality does not work this way. Of course Tan Cheng Bock knows just as well as anyone that they need to be selective, but reality does not give them a choice. With the PAP and WP basically monopolizing good people from both ends of the spectrum, if he just stick to a strict recruitment policy, PSP wouldn't even get enough members, much less good ones, to keep the basic functions of the party online.

If this Jan Chan were a PAP or WP member, you can bet he would have been immediately terminated from the party, not "suspended". The only reason why the PSP is treating this in such an ambiguous way is to desperately try to balance between the need to protect the party image and not piss off all the current and future volunteers/members. It's a sad catch 22 situation that applies to all other political parties.

What's the point of dragging up such an old case? The police have already done their investigations. If you think they did a lousy job, you are welcome to lodge a complaint to the police.

What is wrong being an atheist?

An atheist can still respect other religions.

If you disqualify an atheist, then you should disqualify all other religions too. Because a Christian can't be trusted to respect Islam or Hindu. Likewise a Hindu can't be trusted to respect Christians and Buddhists. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Bock should come out and state the obvious.

PSP expels member who was ex-NSP organising secretary over offensive Facebook post - The Online Citizen
Correspondent
Jan Chan, 30, who was the person behind an offensive Facebook post which went viral online, was expelled from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) yesterday (21 Mar).

Chan posted an image of the Bible and the Quran with the accompanying caption, “For use during toilet paper shortages”, on the Facebook page of NUS Atheist Society, which he ran. The offensive post went viral leading the police to investigate the matter.

Chan was formerly with the National Solidarity Party (NSP) from 2014 to last year, before he jumped ship to join PSP. In fact, he was the organising secretary of NSP.

In a statement yesterday, PSP said, “The party highly values the multiracial and multi-religious society that is Singapore, and will not tolerate any of its members showing disrespect to any religion.”

It also said that PSP is not linked to the NUS Atheist Society and added that it takes the behaviour of all its members very seriously. It said it will “endeavour to ensure that all members keep within the boundaries of the law”.

Chan was immediately expelled following internal investigations within PSP.

In a phone interview with the media, Chan said he did not have any malicious intent and regrets making the Facebook post. “Yes I regret it. The wording could possibly have been better… The whole intent was definitely not to insult any religion or cause outrage,” he said.

Earlier this year, Chan was seen taking part in PSP’s door-to-door home visits in West Coast GRC.

Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has posted a message on its Facebook page saying that it has “no relationship” with the NUS Atheist Society and that the Facebook page was not affiliated to the university.

NUS said it had reported the NUS Atheist Society page to Facebook twice – once in 2019, and again on Mar 19, 2020. On both occasions, NUS asked that Facebook look into the legitimacy of the account.

Former NSP members associate with controversies

This is not the first time that former or present NSP members were in the news publicly for the wrong reasons.

During the 2015 General Election, it was revealed that then NSP president Sebastian Teo was once convicted for corruption in the 1970s, much to the surprise of the public as little was known of his history at the time. Teo first stepped into the political arena in the 2001 General Election as an NSP candidate.

According to media report in 2015, he even hid his criminal record from his two adult children. In the 70s, Teo worked in the Defence Ministry’s purchasing department and was convicted in 1979 of taking bribes in exchange for information on successful bid tenders. In his defence, he told the media that he was convinced by his lawyer to plead guilty.

Another was Spencer Ng. He was part of NSP’s Marine Parade GRC team during the 2011 General Election.

During campaigning, allegations of Ng behaving inappropriately towards a student in 2007 when he was teaching at North Vista Secondary School surfaced. After he was introduced as a new candidate to contest in 2011 General Election, the media was tipped-off about an allegation made against him at the time.

In any case, the Education Ministry confirmed that Ng resigned from teaching in 2007, the same year that those allegations were made against him. A check on NSP website shows that Ng is presently the Secretary-General of NSP. Over the years, at least 5 people have resigned from the same Secretary-General position of NSP.

Just today, Ng told the media that NSP would contest the same constituencies that it did in the last General Election. It had contested in MacPherson SMC, Pioneer SMC, Sembawang GRC and Tampines GRC in 2015.

Ng said that he will lead a team to contest in Sembawang GRC, and party president Reno Fong will lead another team to stand in Tampines GRC.

It was earlier reported that PSP has expressed intention to also contest in Sembawang GRC and Pioneer SMC while Workers’ Party had also contested in MacPherson SMC in 2015 against People’s Action Party and NSP in a three corner fight, where NSP’s candidate,Cheo Chai Chen received a mere 0.82% and lost his deposit.
