Despite the publicity and PAP's grassroots' effort, only 2.2% (85,000 of 3.73 million) turned up for this "One Community Walk" held island-wide at 75 locations today. Considering the effort and resources that have gone into this PAP's event, the turnouts could be better than the usual participation from grassroots members, civil servants, GLC employees, PRs and new citizens.

Over 84,000 to join mass walk
By Andrea Ong

MORE than 84,000 people will take part in Singapore's largest synchronised mass walk on Sunday.

Called the One Community Walk, participants will be flagged off at 8 am by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, 16 ministers, 55 Members of Parliament and grassroots leaders from 75 locations across the country.

The event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the People's Association and aims to boost community bonds ahead of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

It is jointly organised by the PA and the 84 Constituency Sports Clubs (CSCs) islandwide.

Mr Patrick Teo, chairman of the Constituency Sports Club Council, said Singaporeans of all ages and backgrounds rallied together to support the country's bid for the YOG. 'In the same spirit, the CSCs wanted to find an activity that everyone could participate in,' he said.

The event took eight months to put together. More than 4,000 volunteers will be acting as road marshals. The PA hopes to set a Singapore record for the most number of sites in a mass walk event with a synchronised flag-off.

What I saw were mostly students and teachers.

the rest are too busy trying to find ways to repay their hdb loans..

just falling all the NS personels enough.

They'd use the students and teachers first. Letting NSmen off torturous jungles and hills charging for a walk on civilised roads is not their style.

Why are they always eager to create such boliao record? Why commit so much time, effort and resources for such publicity stunt, instead of helping Singaporeans in genuine need for assistance.?

S'pore Walk sets record
By Andrea Ong

THE skies were clear and the sun was out to greet thousands across Singapore who turned up on Sunday for the largest synchronised mass walk organised in Singapore.

The more than 84,000 participants of the One Community Walk gathered at community clubs and open spaces at 75 locations to walk distances of two to three kms.

Flagging them off from their starting points at 8am were 17 ministers, 55 MPs and grassroots leaders. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong did the honours for 7,000 participants at the Khatib Field in Yishun, the site with the largest number of walkers.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong did so at Marine Crescent, while Senior Minister S. Jayakumar was at the Bedok community centre. 'I was really elated by how the walk turned out,' said Constituency Sports Club Council chairman Patrick Teo.

The walk, initiated by the council, was organised by the People's Association (PA) and 84 Constituency Sports Clubs to mark the PA's 50th anniversary and next month's Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

The event created a record for the most number of sites for a mass walk with a synchronised flag-off. The massive event took eight months to plan with the help of 10,000 volunteers. The event also drummed up support for the YOG, which starts on Aug 14
