Survey: One in two Germans want Deutschmark back
BERLIN -- Almost one in two Germans would like to drop Europe's common euro currency and revert back to the old Deutschmark, according to a survey released on Sunday.
The poll, conducted on behalf of the daily Bild, showed that 49 percent of those questioned preferred the old German currency, which was replaced when the euro was introduced in 11 countries in 2002.
The results, which are to be published in Bild on Monday, showed that 51 percent were not happy with the euro as a currency and 77 percent felt it had not benefited them personally. Of those asked, 67 percent also said they feared for the stability of the euro.
