Finance and central bank chiefs from the Group of 20 are on track to issue a consensus document about key economic themes at the end of their meeting in Rio de Janeiro next week, following two years of geopolitical disputes that overshadowed their work and raised questions about the very purpose of the G-20.

Geopolitical clashes, particularly the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, will be addressed in a separate chair statement published by the host nation together with the communique, according to ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, the secretary for economic and financial affairs at Brazil’s foreign ministry.

The first F-16 fighter jets are on their way to Ukraine and will be flying sorties this summer, according to a statement from the Dutch and Danish governments that was released by the White House at the Nato summit.

Dick Schoof, the prime minister of the Netherlands, and Mette Frederiksen, his counterpart from Denmark, said the “transfer process” of F-16s to Kyiv was under way after months of pilot training and political negotiations.

The two leaders said that “Ukraine will be flying operational F-16s this summer” – the first of about 85 of the combat aircraft that have been committed to Kyiv to turn around its fortunes on the battlefield, and Ukraine signalled more may be to come.

Slovakia’s Ministry of Defence is to pursue a lawsuit against the previous cabinet of Prime Minister Eduard Heger and Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad over last year’s supply of 13 MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.

“A criminal complaint directed towards the cabinet of Eduard Heger and the ex-minister Jaroslav Nad will be filed during the course of Friday,” state secretary at the Ministry of Defence Igor Melicher said at a press conference on June 21.

The ministry is headed by Robert Kalinak, one of the closest collaborators of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico at the Leftist Smer party. Smer returned to power last October and immediately axed the state military support of Ukraine, describing it as an election promise after it campaigned aggressively against military support. Fico’s cabinet backs nevertheless commercial military support of Ukraine.

Slovakia, followed shortly after by Poland, was the first Nato country to donate fighter jets to Ukraine, and it had done so while Heger’s second cabinet was without parliamentary backing.

The Netherlands’ defence minister, Kajsa Ollongren, also said the first deliveries of aircraft to Ukraine should take place this summer, and pushed back against criticism over the delays amid reports that Kyiv has been frustrated with the pace of pilot training.

“I completely understand the Ukrainian position, they want to do this as fast as possible … We are doing the project as fast as we can, we are really stretching our capacity,” Ollongren said.

“The F-16s are really much more complicated than the systems the Ukrainian air force were using so far … You cannot just hop over several steps, you have to take every step of the process, but also we want to deliver them as quickly as possible,” she added.

Ukraine has been waiting for months to start using the fighter jets, and hopes their introduction will change the dynamics of the war, forcing Russia to adopt more conservative tactics in its attacks on areas closer to the border.
