PAP de facto leader Lee Kuan Yew will be ‘honored’ tonight by NTUC at the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort for his ‘contributions’ to Singapore’s labor movement.
In an interview with authors of a commemorative book marking the NTUC’s 50th anniversary, Lee proclaimed that Singapore “has a ‘unique brand’ of trade unionism, one where union leaders are committed not just to workers, but also to the community’s well-being.”
Singapore used to have many independent trade unions trumpeting for the rights of workers till Lee’s PAP came into power after which they were all either dissolved or absorbed by NTUC.
‘When it comes to essential services, they do not disrupt it: the PSA or the airport or whatever. We find ways to resolve the difficulties in an intelligent way without hurting both sides. ‘It has made a big difference, as seen from the investments that keep flowing in. If we have the kind of disruptions which other countries have, British Airways going on strike, Bangkok airport under siege, we will destroy our economy,’ Lee noted, lavishing generous self-praise on his ‘legacy’ again.
Under the PAP’s unique ‘tripartite’ system, NTUC is the only legal and recognized trade union in Singapore. Under its tight-fisted control, Singapore workers have their bargaining rights taken away and have no choice but to be ‘herded’ around like blind sheep by the PAP and the business community.
By ‘convention’, the Secretary-General of NTUC is almost always a PAP minister with the incumbent being PAP minister without portfolio Lim Swee Say.
