Mr. Lee still wants to screw Potong Pasir residents?
He wants to get more earthquake tremors?
Party will 'do something right' for Potong Pasir
AS A longtime resident of opposition-held Potong Pasir constituency, PAP member A.K. Lakshmanan wondered if the ruling party had 'abandoned' the constituency after losing again at the 2006 general election.
The Moulmein branch member, who has lived in Potong Pasir for 25 years, said adjacent PAP-held wards were 'fantastic and marvellous' compared to his estate.
Speaking to the party's executive committee at yesterday's convention in Downtown East, he asked if anything could be done for PAP activists and loyalists who had supported the party all this while.
The recent announcement that several blocks in Potong Pasir had been earmarked for the Lift Upgrading Programme was heartening, he said. But he asked what was being done to win the constituency back from opposition MP Chiam See Tong.
Responding, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the problem had to be looked at in a 'detached way', and that no easy solution existed.
While there is the need to look after those in Potong Pasir who voted for the PAP, the party must be careful not to be taken advantage of, he said, recalling the 2006 election.
'We took the approach of doing more for the opposition wards so they would be grateful and vote for the PAP. And Mr Chiam went around saying, 'Why don't you continue voting for me? Then you'll have two MPs for the price of one',' PM Lee noted. After the experience, it was decided that the PAP would change the way it treated Potong Pasir.
'It has been done, and I'm sure your people are feeling it,' Mr Lee said, without going into details.
He said he would not discuss election arrangements in public, but added that 'we will make sure we do something right and try our best to do well in Potong Pasir'.
He was aware of the hard work of PAP activists in opposition wards, and said that they should be thanked.
'To be a PAP activist in Potong Pasir, you need guts.'
