Burgos Cathedral will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site tomorrow.
- To celebrate the anniversary, local authorities have organised a number of different activities for November, including "colouring" the river Arlanzón and creating a giant graffiti.
- The first activity, which will be held on November 14th and led by the city's art director, Javier Tapia, will involve "colouring" the stretch of the river Arlanzón between the bridges of Santa María and San Pablo in Burgos' historic city centre.
- The second activity, also to be held on November 14th, will be modern art's chance to pay homage to the Cathedral with a "monumental graffiti" by Italian artist TV Boy on the walls in Calle Madrid.
- From December 12-13th Javier Tapia will produce scale models of two of the Cathedral's famous steeples as the final urban tribute to the monument.
- A series of restoration projects is currently underway in the cathedral and Juan Álvarez Quevedo, head of the city council, hopes that they will all be complete in time for the cathedral to be officially reopened on July 20th 2016, coinciding with Burgos being European City of Culture.
- The cathedral of Santa María de Burgos was declared a Monument of National Importance on April 8th 1885 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on October 31st 1984.
- It is the only Spanish cathedral that has been honoured in this way by UNESCO. The cathedrals in Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Ávila, Córdoba, Toledo, Seville and Cuenca are all considered World Heritgae by UNESCO,not just for themselves, but rather as part of the historic city centres.
