Seven children and a teacher were stabbed to death iin China in the latest violent incident against schools and nurseries
An attacker stabbed to death seven children and a teacher and injured 20 more pupils at a north-western Chinese nursery this morning, officials said, in the latest shocking case in an epidemic of violence in schools and kindergartens.
It is the fifth such attack in weeks and came despite a massive security drive by authorities around the country, which has included recruiting extra security officers to stand guard outside schools, upping police patrols and specially training and equipping police.
The man struck at a nursery in Nanzheng county of Hanzhong city, Shaanxi province, at 8am today, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
Liu Xiaoming, deputy director of the propaganda department of Hanzhong city, told Associated Press that the attacker killed himself.
A nearby resident said that police had swarmed the area.
She said local people believed the assailant had previous connections to the nursery and had been in conflict with its owners.
The woman added that most of the kindergarten students were aged between two and four.
The previous attacks left China reeling, with parents fearing for the safety of their children and others questioning what could drive the assailants to such extreme acts.
In all, at least 15 children have died and 66 been injured in the spate of violence, which began with the murder of eight children at a school in Fujian province last month.
Police and hospital officials declined to comment on this morning's deaths.
Nanzheng was hit by the devastating earthquake which left almost 90,000 dead or missing in Sichuan and surrounding areas exactly two years ago today.
