SINGAPORE: The number of attempted suicides increased from 1,009 in 2011 to 1,090 in 2012.

This is an increase from 19.5 per 100,000 total population to 20.5.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths arising from suicide rose from 8.1 per 100,000 population in 2011 to 10.3 in 2012.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong revealed these statistics in a written answer to Nominated MPs Laurence Lien and Faizah Jamal who asked about suicide rates in Singapore.

Mr Gan also added that year to year fluctuations may not be representative of longer-term trends.

He added that a local study based on Singapore's suicide statistics from 2000-2004 had reported that relationship problems were associated with one-third of all suicides.

A further one-third of suicides were associated with financial or employment issues.

Mr Gan stressed that collaborative efforts among different ministries are in place to help prevent suicide.

The broad approaches involve building greater resilience in the population, developing targetted interventions for high-risk individuals and increasing public awareness of mental health issues.

The Health Promotion Board also has a peer support training programme which trains selected tertiary students on mental health issues including suicide prevention and equips them with peer support skills to reach out to their fellow schoolmates in need.

For the elderly, social support is a key element in the prevention of suicides, and this is provided through community services such as active ageing programmes and wellness centres managed by the People's Association that encourage socialisation and promote an active lifestyle.

There are a variety of professional services to support persons who are at risk.

Family Service Centres (FSCs) provide professional intervention and support to help families and individuals resolve their social and emotional difficulties and to regain stability and independence. - CNA/fa

Suicide should not be prevented. It should be assisted.

agree. it should also be socially-networked for the best spot and occasion to do the dive into oblivion. my highly esteemed self-sacrificing society is called bedok reservoir organization of suiciders (bros). it's opened only to "bros" on sbf. :D

Life is more and more stressful. Do we expect the numbers to go down?

Stress does not cause suicides. Life devoid of meaning and purpose is the main culprit.

What do call these assisted suicide? Euthanasia?? If my eyes is not reading wrongly, there is an increase of 81...that is a lot??

i dare chan chun sing to make reducing the number of attempted suicides a KPI for his ministry.

Life in singapore is just too stress. In 2012 along 1090
commit suicide. this is many time higher than, say, Malaysia
where

.

Of the 1,156 people who committed suicide over the three-year period, the majority were aged between 24 and 44.

Liow said this was alarming as the victims belonged to the productive age group.

Malaysia population is several.times singapore but as many pple
died of suicide here in one yr as there are in 3yrs over there.

The Malaysia suicide rate
is 1.3 per 100,000 vs 10.3 per 100,000 in singapore
In Singapore we have a suicide.9.times that of Malaysia
and a fertility rate less than half of malaysia.

Piece of cake!! When u have control of the media and the data gathering agency!! Just fudge the nos here, exclude some groups of people there, change some assumptions...and hey presto!!

Suicide is a very complicated issue. Some may be due to financial and social issues. Some may be due to relationship problems. But the underlying issue is not only about the socio-economic milieu, it is also concerned the person's genetic make-up and his mental resilience when under severe physiological and social stresses. Not all of us share the same mental resilience when we are confronted with problems. Some might take it as a challenge and fight on. Some might succumb and cave in under stress. Some will just give up and disappear into the wilderness. Some will just end it all.

It is nothing to do with good or bad government. There are more avenues now open for those who are contemplating suicide. It's just a call away. But the number of attempted suicides will rise with an increase in the population and also with a more competitive environment. The pattern of suicide has changed drastically. Cases of serial kilings and mass shootings is another form of a suicidal mind that has gone berserk. But this is on a grander scale than the individual suicide.

So stay well, stay healthy and stay comfortable.Avoid people who are rabid and mindless dogs who hunt you like predtors.Avoid vulgar, obscene and profane people who put you down.Avoid people who threaten you.Avoid people who are envious and jealous of your success. Avoid unwholesome people. In this way, you will maintain your sanity. Suicide will not touch you. Bless you all.

The Nordic countries, where the state takes of the citizens from cradle to grave, all have suicide rates far higher than Singapore's.

As I said earlier, it is not about stress or finances. If poverty caused suicides, then countries like the Philippines and Brazil where poverty is widespread would be on top of the list.

Therefore higher GDP and the manner in which it is achieved........is:(

Those countries are more honest about their stats.

In Spore if someone shoots himself they will call it "unnatural death" & not suicide. Same thing with many cases of suicides.

fascinating numbers. it seems suicide is a problem of the wealthy nations. Haiti reports Zero suicides per year. you must be crazy to kill yourself in haiti.

Haiti obviously doesn't keep any stats.

Interesting. There must be something really terrible in Greenland that the suicide rate stands out by such a margin.

Ok, just saw these references: http://blogs.aljazeera.com/blog/europe/rising-suicide-rate-baffles-greenland and http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...l_of_the_world.single.html#pagebreak_anchor_2

Good read.
