NUS sorry for privacy breach

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
WE REFER to last Saturday's Forum Online letter by Mr Tang Shangjun ('Privacy takes a back seat at NUS') and would like to thank him for sharing his concerns.
The credit card concerned is part of an affinity card programme under the Office of Alumni Relations, in which a contribution is made to the National University of Singapore (NUS) student financial assistance schemes such as bursaries for needy students.
The university respects the privacy of its students' information and all other members of its community, and has stringent guidelines on the use of such confidential information.
We regret that in this specific instance, the bank was allowed a one-time access to personal information of some of our graduating students, which the bank strictly cannot use for any other purpose.
We have, with immediate effect, discontinued this as well as the issuance of the pre-embossed credit cards by the bank. We apologise for this matter and Ms Adeline Bek of the Office of Alumni Relations will be able to assist with inquiries on 6601-1317 or e-mail: [email protected].
Associate Professor Teo Choo Soo
Director, Office of Alumni Relations
National University of Singapore

In short, it's called 'business partnership' - I give you money, you give me students' particulars.

Should n't NUS emailed the students first and seek their consent before opening the database to the bank which I believe is the true respect of respecting the privacy of the students as NUS claims.

So what is the point in your apology. The damage is done.

Maybe a rapist can also use the same line of defense.

"It was only a ONE-TIME access!"
