A FULL-TIME national serviceman who assaulted two strangers with a metal piece was jailed for 24 months and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane on Thursday.
Daniel Tan Xiao Long, 21, pleaded guilty to striking the left shoulder of Mr Tony Budianto Bee, 24, with a metal piece at Plaza Singapura on Orchard Road on Sept 21.
Half an hour later, he struck Mr Kikushima Kenji, 19, on the left arm, causing an 8cm-long cut and a fracture of the bony tip of his elbow outside Centrepoint.
The first attack took place after his accomplice, Simon Ong Boon Meng, 31, had accused the victim of staring at them. Ong has been dealt with.
While Tan and Ong, together with their friend, were walking on the pavement along Centrepoint, Mr Kenji accidentally brushed against Ong. Ong confronted the victim about the matter and gave him a punch on the face. Tan used the metal piece tucked in his jeans to strike the victim who raised his left arm to block the blow. But his arm was injured and bled profusely.
Tan could have been jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned for the grievous hurt charge.
