A full-time national serviceman (NSF) was fined $3,000 and banned from driving for three years on Wednesday for causing the death of a platoon mate early this year.
Theosophist Richardson Lai Tian En, 21, who pleaded guilty, had failed to ensure that the lever of the Unimog, a 5.6 tonne military vehicle, was in a forward position before driving off at Jurong Camp on Jan 28.
The vehicle jerked backwards as a result and pinned Lance Corporal Eugin Wee Yong Choon, 19, against a pillar, causing him to suffer multiple injuries and his death.
The court heard that about 10 platoon members were unloading equipment from the stationary Unimog that morning when Lai decided to move the vehicle as it was too close to the pillar.
