Taiwan to end conscription

TAIPEI - Taiwan will phase out its decades-old military conscription policy over the next five years, the defence minister said on Monday, amid warming ties with China.
Currently all men aged over 20 are required to do one year's military service.

But Defence Minister Chen Chao-min told reporters that the structure of Taiwan's military manpower will undergo a dramatic change over the next few years.

'From 2011, the number of conscripts will be reduced by at least 10 percent each year, to be replaced by professional soldiers,' Mr Chen said.

'That is to say, eventually, conscript measures will come to an end by 2014.' Critics have argued that the island's armed forces have struggled to enhance their defence capabilities because conscripts are unable to become proficient in high-tech weaponry in their short military service.

However, the new proposals sparked concerns over whether the defence ministry would be able to recruit sufficiently qualified professional soldiers at a monthly salary of NT$35,000 (S$1,550).

The plan to phase out conscription was a campaign pledge of President Ma Ying-jeou during the 2008 election.

The number of service personnel in Taiwan stands at around 275,000, down from a peak of 600,000 during the Cold War.

Taiwan's relatively large army is a legacy of decades of tensions with China, which has regarded the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification since the two sides split at the end of a civil war in 1949.

However, ties between Taiwan and China have improved dramatically since Mr Ma's Kuomintang party took office last May promising to boost cross-strait trade and tourism. -- AFP

NS guys cab't vote until they are 21 & then the PAP system of GRCs makes it unlikely these's going to be any competition for NS guys to choose from.

If the opposition promises to abolish NS, I'm sure they'd win many votes.

THey have reduced the number of years to 2 years. From my tour of year in Army days, the norm would be minimum of 18 months to fully train a soldier.
Perhaps, with changes to training and technology, the time can be shortened. I know in WW2, some of the soldiers in Japan are trained for 6 months before they are sent to war.

What does that show? 2 years are wasting alot of singapore youth time. They can use that time to develop other skills in business or use that time to develop their best potenial.

Not to mention that the so called RT training are wasting a lot of my worker time too. Reservist? A 2 week time in a year is ok, but exemption can be given too. Not call my guys when I need them for work.

No wonder singapore need FT to fill in top sports positions and outside investments to keep the economy going.

Because there are a bunch of useless government scholars sitting up there collecting high salaries and if suddenly there are no more NSF or regulars, they will out of jobs soon and not able to get a relax high pay jobs anymore. And how many years of training have our neighbours?

Malaysia recently introduced NS but its more like the boy scouts. I talked to a Malaysian student nurse who went through "NS". I think she used a broom stick before getting her hands on an M16

Abolishing NS by the PAP would be as good as admitting that it is yet another of their many "FAILED POLICIES" (eg Stop at 2, Graduate Mothers' scheme, CPF, Mother-tongue/No dialects etc).

What I don't understand is; all the opposition parties in S'pore SUPPORT NS conscription and a good majority of citizens support NS conscription (yet keng during ICTs).

What is the rationale for continuing NS conscription when FTs are flooding into S'pore to depress wages and prevent outsourcing and relocation of MNCs to cheaper countries?
The GLCs/GICs have already lost billions of $$$ in th reserves, industries are in a tailspin, PSA is in the doldrums and S'poreans all drink SAI CHWEE (Newater).

Even in this financial crisis; whatever reserves will be used to rescue NOT the citizens who have served NS but the big businesses who, when they do survive, won't be providing employment to those over 40s who have been retrenched.

The day may come when S'pore may be forced unconditionally to merge and rejoin Malaysia for survival. All those years, money, youth, health/lives wasted on defence; singing "Duty, Honour, Country" will be deeply regretted.
