Designed to be enjoyed with a dollop of soy sauce or tomato ketchup.

In Japan, the best-selling popsicle in the land is Garigari-kun. Since its appearance on the market back in 1981, the beloved iced confectionery has been keeping customers happy with its low price point and an ever-increasing array of weird and wonderful flavours, ranging from potato stew to Ultraman.

Now, Garigari-kun is taking a walk on the weird side yet again, with a new flavour that’s got everyone talking: Rich Tamagoyaki.

Tamagoyaki is a type of Japanese omelette made by rolling several layers of cooked egg together in a rectangular pan, and while it’s a tasty savoury treat, it isn’t something you’d usually expect to find in the ice cream section. However, that’s all set to change now, as the new popsicle is said to contain the rich and flavourful taste of tamagoyaki in both the outer ice casing and in the inner shaved ice section as well.

The makers of Garigari-kun say the new release was inspired by their Neapolitan-flavored popsicle which caused waves in the iced confection world five-and-a-half years ago. They were in the mood to create another “strange flavour” for their fun-loving fans, so came up with the idea of an ice cream that would pair well with a condiment like ketchup.

In fact, customers are being encouraged to try the new popsicle with more than just ketchup, offering suggestions like soy sauce, and any other type of topping you’d usually enjoy with tamagoyaki.

That throws the door wide open for our reporting team when it comes to taste-testing the new treat, as there are no boundaries here when it comes to devising weird and wonderful flavour combinations!

The new Garigari-kun Rich Tamagoyaki goes on sale at stores around the country from 1 October, at a recommended retail price of 140 yen (US$1.30) plus tax.
