YOUR LETTERS
Single PRs and HDB flats
<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

I refer to last Sunday's letter, 'Single PR can't buy resale HDB flat'.
I sympathise with her. I'm also a single PR and will be 40 next year. I have been living in Singapore for the past 10 years.
I have been renting because I cannot afford to buy a private apartment. With the cost of private housing escalating in recent months, the affordability is beyond me.
Recently, the Government decided to cut down on public subsidies for PRs in the areas of hospitalisation, education, childcare and so on. The move, to differentiate between privileges for citizens and those for PRs, is understandable.
The same principle can be applied: allow single PRs to own a Housing Board flat but with restrictions, if the policy of differentiation is necessary.
If Singaporeans and PRs face the same criteria to restrict their accessibility to casinos at the integrated resorts, the same principle can be applied to allow single PRs to own HDB flats like their counterparts, the single Singaporeans.
