The World Athletics Federation thanked the former chairman for his four-year prison sentence: the pace of reform will continue
2020-09-17 12:38

News on September 17th, on the 16th local time, the Paris Criminal Court pronounced that the former IAAF chairman Lamin Diak was sentenced to 4 years in prison for accepting bribes in the Russian doping scandal. A fine of 500,000 euros was imposed. After the verdict was pronounced, the World Athletics Federation (predecessor of the IAAF) issued a statement to welcome and thank the verdict.

Diac, 87, was in charge of the IAAF from 1999 to 2015. In world competitions such as the 2012 London Olympics and the 2013 Moscow World Championships in Athletics, Diak took bribes to cover up the positive doping test results of Russian players so that they could continue to participate in these major events. Diak’s son, Papa Massata Diak, had served as a market consultant for the IAAF. He was found to have illegally transferred up to 15 million U.S. dollars in television broadcast contracts and copyright sales to his account. Papa Massata was also sentenced to 5 years in prison.

In addition, former IAAF anti-doping director Gabriel Dole, Diak’s consultant Habib Cisse, former Russian Athletics Association chairman Balashnikov, and former Russian national track and field team middle-distance running coach May Both were found guilty. However, due to his advanced age, Diak may not need to go to jail. Currently, Diak is also under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes in the process of obtaining the right to host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

The court also ruled that the World Athletics Federation received 16 million euros in compensation. The IAAF stated in its statement that it was disappointed by the crimes committed in this project, but at the same time expressed gratitude for the court’s strong and clear judgment. The World Athletics Federation stated that it will continue the pace of reform initiated in 2016 to ensure that similar personal behaviors will no longer appear in track and field events.

World Anti-Doping Agency President Witold Banca also stated that this is a victory for clean sports and athletes, showing that no one can be above the law.

Former IAAF President Diak was sentenced to 4 years for corruption for covering up Russian athletes' drug use

Lamine Diack, the former chairman of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF), was sentenced to 4 years in prison for accepting bribes in a Russian doping incident, with a two-year suspension of execution and fined US$590,000 (approximately RMB 4 million) yuan).

The court found that the 87-year-old was not guilty of "organized money laundering".

Diak is accused of covering up the fact that Russian athletes are taking doping so that they can participate in major events including the 2012 London Olympics and the 2013 Moscow World Championships. The prosecutor accused Diak of using this to demand 3.45 million euros (approximately 27.64 million yuan) from the athletes to cover up his doping crimes.

It is unclear whether the former IOC member will go to jail and serve his sentence. He has been under house arrest in Paris for the past two years. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence him to four years in prison.

Senegal refused to extradite Diak’s son Papa Massata to France, and he was charged with money laundering and breach of trust in an absentee trial. As a former market consultant of the IAAF, Massata insisted that he and his father were victims of the "Anglo-Saxon Conspiracy" and insisted that both of them were innocent.

The prosecution also demanded a sentence of imprisonment for Gabriel Dollé, the head of the IAAF's anti-doping, and Habib Cisse, an adviser to Ramin Diak.
