Both Telcos are probably planning how to recover their cost now...

IF THE results of a quick poll of seven blocks is any indication of the take-up rate of the World Cup package, SingTel and StarHub have their work cut out for them.
With just a day to go to the World Cup, only 37 among the 625 HDB households The Straits Times visited yesterday said they had signed up for the football extravaganza on television - a take-up rate of about 6 per cent.
Those who did not sign up gave a range of reasons but the main one was a lack of interest. This was cited by over two-thirds of those who said 'no' in the poll covering four- and five-room flats in Yishun, Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Queenstown and Tampines.
A typical response was that given by accounting assistant Mandy Chu, 28, who said: 'Nobody in my family watches football so it doesn't really matter.'
The remainder cited the high price of the package and a lack of time as reasons for not subscribing. The two telcos announced an early-bird package of $70.62 for those who signed up by May 31. Subscribing to it now would cost $94.16.
The amounts are a stark contrast to the $10.50 StarHub charged its subscribers for its early-bird World Cup package in 2006. Several of the people who were interviewed highlighted this yesterday.
