In Today's ST.

Conveniently left at 18 and now claiming that they are not trying to avoid NS. Could have done it like most people and left.

There are many people in this boat including those cases where both parents are Singaporeans. Wonder why ST is suddenly raising this case.

The US and the British embassies are really good at this, making clear what the obligations are. The Norwegians who have a long diplomatic presence here because of their merchant fleet would have been equally familiar. Father must have thought that he was smarter than this govt.

The problem lies MAINLY with the S'pore govt's obsession with National Service, Dual Citizenship and the great 'secrecy' over exemptions.

Scroobal, if you had read the ST article, you would have noticed the inset whereby MINDEF was most secretive about the maximum age requirement for leaving S'pore to be exempt from NS liabilities.

The unfortunate state of affairs repeated over and over is caused mainly by the ambiguity in MINDEF exemptions policieis and the foolishness of the parents in not digging deep for the details and putting their children in this dilemma.

Is really forcing someone who has no more ties with the country to do NS really in S'pore's interest? Doesn't the PAP and MINDEF realise that forcing foreign citizens to do NS may be flouting other nation's laws as well as compromising S'pore's own fragile National Security in training foreigners in the SAF; all of MINDEF'S SOPs, tactics, strengths/weaknesses etc would be exposed!

Countries like Taiwan don't even make a big fuss about their NS by imposing a battery of punitive actions against those who have emigrated or who are no longer resident in Taiwan.

Quite an unusual case.

Normally these defaulters, to be diplomatic, tend to lean more to the "creative side". You know, musicians, artisits.....

But these Norwegians are career military folk back home. So its really a case of loyalty to country.

NS should not be punishment for citizenship. It should be about cultivating loyalty to country.

guys born in sgp are already fated to be slaves for the rest of their lives.

when we think, the army is over, we are enslaved to our job hoping to save for a HDB pigeonhole. to be enslaved by HDB, u got to slough to be enslaved by cpf.

then there is slaved to pleasing the gf. slaved to traps hidden in hasty marriages. slaved to the costs of child-raising. slaved to divorce alimony....

we enslaved ourselves in this cuntry.

...and our gabramen keeps stressing "TO BE GRACIOUS".....how to with liddat kind of mentality??

You have made reasonable points. This case also appears to have a particularly strange curious twist. 2 of the 3 sons appear to be regulars in the Norwegian armed forces. Now how does MINDEF expect these 2 to serve NS? Would these 2 then have knowledge of SAF's abilities when they possibly return to the Norwegian armed forces? What if these 2 happen to enter S'pore on work related activities for the Norwegian Armed Forces? would they be arrested?

Agree with you. Poeple are repeatedly caught because these guys will not reveal anything. I don't how long they will carry on like that. The musican affair clearly shows that double standards apply.

The policy is one of equal pain. I am aware of cases of serving in 2 different armed forces. Ex-citizens who return to Singapore to work are also required to do reservist in SAF even thought they are now foreign nationals.

I am curious why this story and why now. These things have been going for years and Pan Pacific Hotel in JB survives on fugitive NS wanted man meeting their familes, coming from all parts of the world.
