BEIJING - CHINA has expanded a product recall for a local pharmaceutical company whose herbal injections have been linked to the deaths of three people, the country's food and drug watchdog said in a notice on Saturday.
China last week recalled two batches of a herbal drug produced by Wandashan Pharmaceutical, a company based in northeastern Heilongjiang province, after the injections caused strong adverse reactions in six people from southwestern Yunnan province, three of whom died.
The medicine, made from Siberian ginseng, had been used to treat liver, kidney and heart conditions, state media said.
Authorities said the problem batches had been tainted with bacteria.
The recall had now been expanded to include all of the company's intravenous drugs, the State Food and Drug Administration said in a notice on its website, citing a joint statement with the Ministry of Health.
'Closely watch for any adverse effects from intravenous drugs, report them immediately, and take appropriate measures,' the notice said, without providing further details.
The expanded recall comes on the heels of a scandal over milk adulterated with melamine, which has killed four children, sickened tens of thousands of others and prompted recalls around the world. -- REUTERS Read also:
