Surely these crabs deserve to be treated more humanely, opines a STOMPer, who was struck by the sight of so many crabs being squeezed into tanks for sale at a Dempsey Road restaurant.
The STOMPer was shocked and appalled to see this, and said in an email to STOMP:
"Everyone who believes that all living creatures should be at least treated humanely, should stop eating at this restaurant in Dempsey Road.
"The way huge Alaskan King crabs are stored in water tanks is unacceptable.
"There were two tanks, packed with about 80 King crabs.
"Not only were the crabs at the bottom of the tanks crushed, with their legs detached from the body, they had also been immobilized for some time.
"Since one crab is at least $200-$300, it should take a long while before the crabs at the end gets sold off. I reckon at least one to threeweeks.
"I wonder if the King crabs that consumers are paying good money for are fresh but I definitely feel strongly against the poor treatment of crabs. Albeit they are going to end up eventually on our plates, but they should be stored in more humane conditions in larger tanks.
"A King crab weighs about 3 - 5 kg EACH. Can youimagine the poor fella at the bottom? Just think of yourself stuck right at the bottom of a pile of bodybuilders..."
