Lousy dining experience at Iluma Bugis because staff did not understand English

lousy_dining_experience-thumbnail.jpg

STOMPer CWW was annoyed that service staff at two Iluma dining outlets had issues getting orders right because of their poor standard of English.

In an email to STOMP today (Sept 12), the STOMPer says:

“I happened to pass by HLX Fusion at Iluma for dinner with my friend.

“Just as we were glancing through the menu, the waiter standing there asked if we were students.

“From our outlook and maturity, it is common sense we are working adults.

“My friend asked the waiter whether we look like students. Insensitive to my friend's expression and remark, the waiter went on to say that he thought we were students and that there's a promotion now and so on and so forth.

“My friend then got angry and so we decided to try Cheeky Chocolate, which is the restaurant next to it.

“As usual, we decided on a meatball pasta to be shared, coupled with two desserts, which we indicated to the waiter taking the order that the main course was to be served first.

“He agreed and even nodded. However, another waiter came over minutes later with the dessert crepe we ordered. My friend then told the waiter she had earlier informed the waiter taking the order that the dessert was be served later. The waiter then kept nodding but didn’t give reply.

“Forgetting about the incident, the waiter went off with the dessert and served the main course shortly. To our utter disgust, the meatball spaghetti that we ordered was actually beef balls as the color was different.

“We soon called the manager to confirm if it was indeed beef. I can’t take beef. Due to the ignorance of the waiter who did not ask for the manager's assistance as his English language was bad, I had eaten the beef.

“It was probably not the waiter's fault if his English could not make the mark, but it is his fault when he did not seek a higher head for assistance to confirm what the customer wanted.

“Angry with the restaurant, we decided to go elsewhere even though the manager apologised and said the meal was on the house.

“Just as we were walking by the first restaurant with the prominent waiter my friend had an issue with, he suddenly kept eyeing my friend's movements and even barked loudly towards her.

“My friend had wanted to walk off but it was the waiter who kept trying to create an argument. It came to such an extent the waiter dared my friend to call the manager.

“Just when the manager was apologising to my friend about the waiter's bad performance, the waiter tried argue back, to the extent like he wanted to bash up my friend.

“Really bad service staff encountered at Iluma, who employ waiters who do not understand English.”

Interestingly enough Singaporeans sometimes are the customers from hell which waiters dread.

My take is that the 2 charbos got what they deserved. Want to be treated properly please treat others properly too.

Two bad incidents with waiters in a row. Yeah, I think the 2 customers were at fault too.

If the waiter from China thinks you two cunts are student, then that means your outlook is like that of a secondary schoolkid's and your maturity is not there. Get it stupids?

Who gives a flying fuck as to whether you ask the question back with the intent. If I were him I would do the same also. He was just telling you fucks the truth and you losers got angry.

Angry with this, angry with that. You cunts are so angry about everything. I would be very angry also if I put it in your mouths and you don't know how to respond. The other manager gave you a free meal and apologized, and you insist on putting on airs and leaving.

Oh yes, the first waiter was right in barking at you. He should have given you two a punch in the face.

Sporn fucks give bad service, but complain when foreigners do the same. Double standards really.

"don't speak English." HAha what a weak insult. Why don't you tell him that in his face instead of typing it behind a computer at home? Why, scared aren't you? Pussies.

Chinks in general, regardless of nationality or geographic origin, have very high inferiority complex according to Bo Yang, author of The Ugly Chinaman. These 2 Chao Cheebye Char Bors thought it was an insult when the waiter asked if they were students which they felt have lower social status than working adults.

There's no name or race mentioned. If the diners are non-Chinese, then it's the PRC waiter's fault for not seeking help for translation, or better still, get an English speaker to serve them. However, if the diners are Chinese, they should speak Mandarin to the PRC waiter; why insist on speaking English?

When "meatball" spaghetti is ordered, what sort of "meat" does one expect to get in Singapore?

I think that the generic term "meat" when used in Chinese majority countries (e.g. China, Taiwan, HK, Singapore) is taken for granted to mean pork. In Thailand and most western countries, it means beef. In Indian and Muslim majority countries, it means mutton.

You forgot about Muslims. They have it easier. Just look for Halal logo means can eat. It's a wonder why, India, with more than a billion population plus millions of overseas Indian population, didn't come up with a Hindu standardisation and logo (i.e. food without beef) so that Indians in India and around the world can look for and safely eat without worry. Come to think of it, perhaps a standardised Vegan logo is a good idea too.
