In 1993, he was sentenced to death by the Nigeria's military ruler Sani Abacha for 'treason' but fled to US. He is now a creative writing don at universities in Las Vagas and Los Angeles. Here are some of his thought provoking views on Singapore and the world:
On Singapore: I find it well laid-out, very orderly with a kind of antiseptic atmosphere.
On The problem with mass migrations: If the government truly cares for its own people, it will realise that there's a real problem if its people are going out in droves.
On The solidarity of evil: It's what I call many leaders who are themselves criminals in their own territories.
On Anyone who defends errant leaders: Stop playing the game of We versus Them. The only 'versus' that has any meaning is freedom versus power.
On The worth of freedom: Without it, people are caged animals, and human has not yet progressed.
On What he tells those who tolerate leaders who are criminals: Why are you saying this over dead bodies, the tortured, mutiliated, raped itizens, your own people?

I know Soyinka was in Singapore to grace the Writers' Fest, but did he say all that at the meetings? What was the context in which these comments were made? Finally, what's your source?

I am not doubting your integrity here, but I'm surprised he was allowed to make incendiary statements during his stint here. I will be even more surprised if some paper or mag actually published the comments.

Good insights, but it takes more than one Nobel laureate to unlock an old goat and his army.

Actually if u r a Nobelist u r untouchable. PAP knows better than to jail, fine, sue and cane him.

My guess is, the Running Dogs and Por Lampars attending the fest just grinned and clenched their jaws.

As for poor Soyinka, his country is still down shit creek. Yes, LEEgal or not, Nigeria is truly more corrupt that Shittypore. So PAPpies know Soyinka isn't powerful enough to effect change, no matter what he says.

Someone obviously forgot to gently remind esteemed Wole Soyinka that Singapore is the land of the Ah Beng where dignity and freedom can be traded for a fast buck. It takes a black man to remind the yellow skins of basic human truths in their own backyards. Pretty sure it fell on tin ears though. :D

God bless you Wole Soyinka. May the Ah Bengs rot in fucking hell.
