BARELY two years after he took the job amid much fanfare, the dean of Nanyang Technological University's (NTU's) business school has quit.
Professor Jitendra Singh's resignation was announced in an e-mail to NTU staff and students from university president Su Guaning yesterday afternoon.
The message said that Prof Singh, 54, will serve as senior adviser to Dr Su at Nanyang Business School (NBS).
NBS' current executive vice-dean Gillian Yeo will be appointed as interim dean.
In the e-mail, Dr Su said that Prof Singh had decided to leave because of 'considerable challenges on the personal front'.
However, The Straits Times understands that a funding dispute with NTU provost Bertil Andersson had a part to play in Prof Singh's decision.
Colleagues who declined to be named said Prof Singh felt the school deserved more money because of its strong performance in recent years.
They said he wanted to use the funds to hire more professors from top foreign universities to propel the school to greater heights.
When contacted, Professor Andersson maintained that Prof Singh had resigned because his daughter had problems adapting to life in Singapore.
He added that Prof Singh's family had returned to Pennsylvania in the United States about six months ago.
However, the provost did say that Prof Singh had asked for additional funding for NBS, and that this was denied.
He declined to say how much money was asked for, but described it as an 'amount not granted in any college or university in the world'.
Added Prof Andersson: 'I would like to make it clear that the Nanyang Business School received about a 22 per cent increase in funding in the last two years.
'This is more than the other colleges in the university. For example, the College of Engineering received about a 10 per cent increase in funding.'
He said: 'Of course, I would like to give the deans more money but I am not a coin machine. If I were to grant the requests, I would have to take money away from the other programmes.'
Despite the differences over funding, however, Prof Andersson said relations between the university and Prof Singh are cordial.
He added: 'Prof Singh's partnership with NTU has not ended. He will still be coming back for several weeks every year, an arrangement he feels suits his family's situation.'
Since Prof Singh, the former vice-dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, joined NBS in September 2007, the school has rapidly climbed international rankings.
Last year, it was ranked 46th in the Financial Times' ranking of Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes around the world - the highest ranking ever achieved by a Singapore business school. Just a year before, the school was ranked 67th. In an interview with The Business Times last year, Prof Singh said he planned to elevate the Nanyang MBA to the top 25 in the world by the end of his six-year term.
