Foreign workers block Boon Lay MRT exit to watch World Cup

STOMPers think that it may be hazardous for such a large crowd to gather at Boon Lay station to watch the World Cup telecast. The crowd, consisting largely of foreign workers, is blocking the exit. STOMPer John hopes SMRT will take action to prevent this overcrowding.

STOMPer Fat Pig said:

“These pictures were taken at the walkway that joins the Boon Lay MRT station to Jurong Point.

“The management of the shopping mall and a local telco have decided to set up several TV screens to telecast the world cup matches in order to attract more shoppers.

“The matches were shown in the morning and in the evening and this attracted a big crowd especially the foreign workers.

“In the evening the crowd was twice as big and the walkway became very narrow for passers-by.

“There is much empty land beside the MRT station which was previously used as the bus interchange and now it lies idle.

“The screening of the World Cup series could have been shown in that empty land and there would be no obstruction to the walkway.”

Fellow STOMPer John said:

"They stand on the stairs and block the extire exit of Boon Lay MRT.

"It is dangerous as someone could fall or there could be a fire.

"The SMRT staff ignored the situation and they were looking on and doing nothing. Hope they can take action to prevent more overcrowding."
