Fined for shoplifting, bribery

A SHOPLIFTER made matters worse for herself by trying to bribe store security officers to let her off.
For stealing about $37 of food items, De Livera Shanela Ruwanthi, 21, was fined $1,000 on Monday.
The Sri Lankan, who is studying interior design at the Lasalle College of Arts, also pleaded guilty to the corruption chrage for which she was fined $5,000.
A district court heard that she was caught leaving the Cold Storage store in Parkway Parade shopping centre without paying for the Haagen Dazs ice-cream and cookies, pasta and fish fingers found in her sling bag at 8pm on March 31.
In the office, she pleaded with the two security officers to let her go and offered them the $150 she had on her.
She could have been sentenced to up to five years in jail and fined up to $100,000 on the corruption charge and up to three years and up to $10,000 for theft.
