The downturn and the changing nature of corporate largesse are making the once freely available corporate diaries and desk calendars rare commodities. Makers and suppliers of such corporate gifts are reporting steep declines in their annual sales of 10 to 50 per cent. -- ST PHOTO: KEVIN LIM

THE wave of corporate diaries and calendars that usually washes over workplaces this time of year has dried up, with 2010 looming as the year people will just have to buy their own. Banking and manufacturing companies - noted for corporate gift-giving - are handing out fewer goodies, which means firms that make these freebies are hurting with sales down as much as 50 per cent. Mr Frankie Chia, chairman of the Gifts Association of Singapore, said: 'Sales of corporate diaries and gifts are generally much worse this year as corporate customers cut back on their budgets.' Mr Chia Eng Kiat, managing director of the corporate gift supplier Tredan Connections, said: 'Companies are still spending on corporate gifts and diaries, but are more selective and only give gifts to their preferred customers, unlike previous years when the economy was better.' He said while orders for diaries and gifts from the insurance and pharmaceutical industries have not changed from last year, bank orders have slipped slightly. But orders from the manufacturing industry have suffered the worst hit.

whats so special about those diaries ? can be exchange for money ?

I did an informal survey over the last five years - I asked about fifty people what they did with the free diaries given to them. About 80% said they put them aside and forgot about them. Many of these use desktop calendars and / or phone / pdas.

It is a healthy trend to stop wasting paper.

Should have stop given free long ago to reduce waste. Every years received too many and use it as scrap paper.

Nothing special actually but the one i received is good quality and nice. If i don't use it i can give it away, if its plain ordinary i will just dump it.
