MR BENIGNO "Noynoy" Aquino, who has sewn up the Philippine presidential election, yesterday said the process of selecting his Cabinet members was already under way.

Set to win by a big majority, the 50-year-old scion of the fabled Aquino family told reporters "we are already doing our talent search for the Cabinet positions...the people who will be implementing our policy guidelines".

However, he made it clear his sister Kris, 39, will not have an official role, and that family members will not be chosen.

"We will not be appointing relatives up to fourth, fifth degree of consanguinity. Kris craves no role in my administration," he said.

Ms Aquino, an actress and TV host, played a starring role in his campaign. Mr Aquino added that his girlfriend, 30-year-old Shalani Soledad, would continue to "be performing her job as councillor in Valenzuela".

As for the Cabinet, it will be a shrunken affair.

Said Mr Aquino: "We will be reducing the number of Cabinet positions... Those without portfolio, the consultants, the advisers (must go) so the government can save money. Only those needed will be retained."

Filipinos were also voting for a vice-president, senators and congressmen, as well as provincial, town and city officials.

Former first lady Imelda Marcos, 80, won a seat in the House of Representatives, representing Ilocos Norte province, while eldest child Imee, 56, won as provincial governor.

Sole son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr, 52, was set to make it into the Senate.
