Nine arrested in raid on illegal gambling den

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested nine people in a raid on an illegal gambling den in Geylang.

That followed a five-hour operation which started Wednesday at about 10pm.

Officers raided a shop house located along Geylang Road, arresting eight men and one woman, aged between 25 and 59 years old.

Police said a 59-year-old male suspect had rented the shop house to operate as a gambling den.

Twenty-nine modified computers and cash amounting to about S$860 were also seized.

Five of the suspects, including the 59-year-old man, will be charged in court on Friday.

Investigations against the remaining suspects are on-going.

A person found guilty of managing an illegal gambling den is liable to be fined between S$5,000 and S$50,000 and is also liable to be jailed for up to three years.

A person found guilty of gaming in an illegal gambling den is liable to be fined up to S$5,000 and can also be jailed for up to six months.
