Nightspot raided once again

GEORGE TOWN: Unfazed by a raid carried out by the state Immigration Department barely 24 hours earlier, an entertainment outlet in Burmah Road sprung back into action, only to be raided again – by the police this time. A 10-man team from the Bukit Aman anti-vice branch raided the outlet at 11.30pm on Tuesday and rounded up 20 guest relations officers (GROs) from China and seven from Vietnam.

The raid, dubbed Ops Noda, was led by Chief Insp Badrul Hisham Bakri. An attempt by two GROs to flee through the back exit was foiled by policemen while a few others were found hiding behind some furniture. The outlet even had several guard dogs to keep watch over the entrance and a red beacon light that would flash in the event of a raid. A check showed the women, in their 20s and 30s, had entered the country as tourists and were working illegally.

All those detained were sent to the police headquarters here for further investigations under the Immigration Act 1959/63. On Monday, 24 GROs, also from China and Vietnam, were rounded up in a raid. Some of them took off their high-heeled shoes and tried to make run for it but failed as all the exits were secured.
