PETALING JAYA - Junaidi Mat heard a thud as he was walking towards his motorcycle which was parked at a flat and he thought it was rubbish thrown from the upper floor.

However, he had a shock when it turned out to be a dead newborn baby.

"The sound came from about three metres behind me at around 11am. I thought it was rubbish as the flat occupants here are notorious for tossing rubbish from the upper floors," the 35-year-old said.

"But I had a shock when I saw it was the body of a newborn baby. I immediately called the police and informed a few neighbours whose units were on the ground floor of the Desa Mentari flats.

Police arrested a 20-year-old woman, who lives with her family on the third floor, on suspicion of tossing the newborn baby a few hours later.

It is learnt the family of the woman was not at home at the time and police, who interviewed the family, said they were unaware that their daughter was pregnant.

Police have yet to determine if the baby, who had her umbilical cord still attached, had died due to the fall or was stillborn.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed the case. The body has been sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for post-mortem.
