GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — A 25-year-old New Zealander is standing trial in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on drug smuggling charges.

Peter Gardner, who also has Australian citizenship, was detained in Guangzhou on Nov. 8 when police said he was trying to smuggle more than 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of methamphetamine out of China. Gardner was detained along with a 22-year-old Australian woman who was later released.

Gardner could face the death penalty if convicted.

He arrived Thursday morning at the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court building in a police truck. Relatives and Australian consular officials also attended the proceedings.
