New rules on child's race

FROM Jan 2, parents will be required to indicate the race of their babies at birth - a move intended at giving mixed marriage couples more flexibility in picking their child's race.

The change, introduced by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Tuesday, will allow a child from a mixed marriage to take on either parent's race.

For instance, the newborn of a Caucasian-Chinese couple can be either a Caucasian, a Chinese, or a Eurasian.

Currently, the child's race follows that of the father, by default.

Explaining the rationale for the change, the ICA said yesterday that the change would give parents of mixed marriages the 'flexibility and choice to decide and declare' their child's race at birth.

If parents cannot decide the child's race when they register the birth, the child will take on the father's race until the age of 15 - at which point, it will be officially recorded during the application for an identity card.

I just read the ICA FAQ on this. Looks like you can change anytime and multiple times. Quite hilarious.

So in the future, we may have siblings of different race although from same parents?

Why is it that the authorities must have things in black or white when it is actually grey?

Another tool for the MIWs to play around with the ethnic race quota policy. KNN

It would apply to all except the Malays as no matter father or mother, the child is still going to be a Muslim? So it would make sense for the child to be a Malay as one would have more problem being a non Malay-Muslim.

You are mixing race with religion. There are Chinese muslims, Indian Muslims and even Eurasian muslims. In Singapore you can be a Malay and be a christian. I always found it interesting that many singaporeans can't tell the two apart.
