KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has officially withdrawn support for Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also called for Muhyiddin to step down.

Zahid made the announcement after a Supreme Council meeting, which lasted over four hours, at the party’s headquarters.

Reading out a prepared statement, Zahid said that the government failed to fulfil the two requirements that the party had set to justify support for Muhyiddin’s administration.

They were, realising the aspirations of the people and addressing the economic slowdown, as well as coming up with an effective plan to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Muhyiddin failed to fulfil these requirements and implement them satisfactorily.
“It is clear the government failed in fulfilling the aspirations of the rakyat,” he said, citing the abuse of the emergency as an example.

“In abiding by the wishes of the delegates at the annual general assembly (last March) we are withdrawing support for Muhyiddin Yassin (as prime minister) with immediate effect.”

Zahid also expressed hope that Muhyiddin would step down so that an interim prime minister could be appointed.
The Bagan Datuk MP said that an election must be called for once the country had achieved herd immunity with respect to the Covid-19 vaccination programme.
A source in the know said 46 Umno leaders were eligible to vote on the matter with 35 voicing support for the plan to withdraw support for Muhyiddin without conditions.
“One leader abstained from voting, another reserved his right to decide now, while eight others backed the move on the condition that Umno will not work with (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim or DAP.
“Only one person, a deputy minister who is vocal against Zahid, objected to the plan to withdraw support for Muhyiddin.”
The source said the Supreme Council had resolved that MPs can continue to support PN until Parliament reconvenes.
“We want Muhyiddin to resign and for Parliament to choose a new prime minister.”
Umno is the biggest bloc in the PN-led government, which holds a slim majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
In March, the Umno annual general assembly decided to push for the general election to be held as soon as the Emergency ends, either on Aug 1 or before that, failing which it would decide on a date to withdraw the party’s support for PN.
The past week saw high-profile meetings among Umno leaders, with speculation that the party was going to quit the government sooner than August.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Tempers began to fray at tonight’s Umno supreme council meeting with much flak directed at president Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is trying to pull the party from supporting the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

Several sources who are in the know of what happened told Malay Mail that Zahid is digging in his heels to withdraw support for PN, leaving him in an even more precarious position than before the meeting started.

“Some Umno leaders urged the president to see reason in maintaining a stable government, at least for the time being, while the government tries to contain Covid-19 and restart the economy,” one source said on condition of anonymity.

Another source disclosed that the chief critic leading the charge against Zahid is his vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who was newly announced as the deputy prime minister.

The second source said Ismail’s faction has the support of many Umno ministers. They are demanding Zahid stand down.

“Ismail firmly and sternly told Zahid that many are weary of his political stand to withdraw Umno’s support from PN and want him to stop,” said the source.

A third source said Zahid is not without supporters in the supreme council. They are adamant that Umno must hold the prime minister’s seat, currently occupied by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from Bersatu.

“The Zahid camp is convinced that Umno should be given the front seat in the administration as the people felt that the current government has failed,” said the third source.

The Umno supreme council comprises 46 members. Most of them do not hold Cabinet positions in the Muhyiddin administration. Only 15 are MPs.

In comparison, most of the Umno leaders backing Ismail are not even members of the supreme council. These include Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein who was also promoted to senior minister in the PN government, and taking on the additional Security Cluster portfolio. Other Umno ministers who are seen as PN-friendly are Khairy Jamaluddin who is also coordinating the national Covid-19 immunisation programme and Tan Sri Annuar Musa who was very recently replaced as the party secretary-general.

Analysts contacted by Malay Mail earlier had already said Zahid’s position as president is shaky prior to the party’s supreme council meet tonight when the Prime Minister’s Office announced the promotion of Ismail to deputy prime minister and Hishammuddin as senior minister in charge of the Security Cluster.

Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the appointment of the two Umno men at such a time was to catapult both leaders to the highest hierarchy in the party to check Zahid’s influence and the possibility of the country’s largest Malay party officially withdrawing support for the PN government.

The supreme council meeting finally ended at 12.45am.

KUALA LUMPUR: The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has withdrawn its support for the Perikatan Nasional government led by Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and called for his resignation, said UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Wednesday (Jul 7).

In a late night online press conference held after UMNO's supreme council meeting, Ahmad Zahid criticised the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahmad Zahid said that UMNO had supported Mr Muhyiddin as prime minister based on the condition that he could fulfill two major guidelines determined by the supreme council back on Mar 11 in 2020.

"These were ensuring the people's aspirations were truly realised, and that the government should quickly control the economic downturn and devise an effective plan to handle the COVID-19 pandemic," said Ahmad Zahid.

These guidelines were not fulfilled, said Ahmad Zahid, adding that the government had failed in seven aspects, such as pandemic management, misusing Malaysia's state of emergency for political purposes and failing to defend the country's parliamentary democracy.

Based on the unanimous decision by delegates at UMNO's 2020 Annual General Meeting and the government's failures, Ahmad Zahid said support for Mr Muhyiddin's prime-ministership has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

"UMNO urges Muhyiddin Yasin to withdraw honourably to enable a new prime minister to be appointed for a limited period," he said.

The new prime minister would only focus efforts on the people's welfare throughout the pandemic, handle COVID-19 with an inclusive approach and ensure the vaccination and immunisation process could be sped up.

Once herd immunity was achieved, he said, this prime minister must advise the King to return the people's mandate to hold the 15th general election.

Ahmad Zahid also stated that UMNO will not support opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister. His party will also not support any coalition together with Pakatan Harapan or the Democratic Action Party, he said.

The announcement came after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin reshuffled his Cabinet on Wednesday, promoting senior minister for defence Ismail Sabri Yaakob to deputy prime minister.

Mr Hishammuddin Hussein, who held the foreign affairs portfolio, was promoted to senior minister as well.

UMNO's status as a partner within the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, led by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) under Mr Muhyiddin, has been increasingly called into question.

During the UMNO general assembly in March this year, the party had concluded it would withdraw support for the PN government if there were no indications of a general election within the near future.

Umno was given the DPM position...n they withdrew from the coalition? Is umno not united in this?

KUALA LUMPUR: Mr Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been appointed as Malaysia’s deputy prime minister, while Mr Hishammuddin Hussein is now a senior minister.

Their respective defence and foreign affairs portfolios remain unchanged. As senior minister, Mr Hishammuddin will take over the role of coordinating minister for security from Mr Ismail Sabri.

In a statement on Wednesday (Jul 7), the Prime Minister's Office said the appointments will increase the ability of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthening unity among the political parties that form the government.

The appointments will take place with immediate effect.

On Mr Ismail Sabri's new role, the statement said: "This appointment will be able to assist the prime minister in managing the country's administration and fulfil the people's needs at a time when the country is facing a health and economic crisis."

Mr Hishammuddin would assist Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in implementing the National Recovery Plan, it added.

This is the first Cabinet reshuffle since the PN government took power in late February last year, following a power tussle.

Mr Ismail Sabri was previously one of the four senior ministers in the Cabinet, which did not have a deputy prime minister post. He has played a prominent role in Malaysia’s response to COVID-19, tasked with communicating the various restrictions.

Both Mr Ismail Sabri and Mr Hishammuddin are politicians from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). Mr Ismail Sabri is one of the three vice presidents of the party. Mr Hishammuddin does not hold a position in the party's supreme council currently.

U trust politicians?

Even if there us a election, there will not be any more majority block like in the old days. The parties eill have to form a coalition to govern.

UMNO should take a leaf from LKY. See how they rule the minorities in Sinkieland.
